Q, I am aifarmer and I used
1967 as the year -of
averaging for income tax
purposes and am eligible to
average again in 1973. Am
I required to average again
using 1973 as the year of
averaging, or can I wait
until a year in which
averaging would be more
beneficial to me?
A. You may choose any year
you wish as the year of
averaging, provided that
returns have been filed as
required and that the
averaging period chosen
does not overlap another
period for which you have
averaged.,
Q. I retired from farming and
now live in the city. My
farm lands are,rented to a
tenant. I make six or more
trips each year to the farm
to supervise seeding, sum-
mer fallowing and har-
vesting. Can I claim the ex-
pense incurred in
travelling to and from the
farm?
A. Travelling expenses in-
curred while travelling to
and from your farm cannot ,
be claimed as a deduction
from your rental income.
Q. I bought land in 1965 on a
half-share-crop basis and
this half share was sold in
the vendor's name. Do I
have to pay income tax on
the half share that was
paid to the vendor?
A. Yes. The half share that is
sold in the vendor's name
is your income and the sub-
sequent payment to the
vendor is considered to be
,an instalment on the pur-
chase price and is not
deductible.
Is a farmer required to
make Canada Pension
Plan deductions from the
wages paid to farm help?
Deductions for the Canada

made-from all wages ,Paid
for farm labour, provided
the employee has reached
18 years of age but has not
yet reached 70, and has
received cash wages of
$250 or more and has
worked for"25 days for the
employer during the year.
Q. What is the income tax
situation if I sell land with
standing crop?
A. If the agreement specifies
an amount for the standing
crop, that amount is in-
come to the vendor and an ,
expense to the purchaser.
If the agreement does not
specify an amount for stan-
ding crop, then no portion
of the selling price is at-
tributable to the standing
crop as far as the pur-
chaser and vendor are con-
cerned. To complete the
answer, your transaction
insofar as the land value is
concerned is subject to the
capital gains provision
which was introduced in
1972.
Q. I understand that com-
mencing in 1972,
depreciation on any new
depreciable farm assets
acquired in 1972 or sub-
sequent years must be
taken under Part XI of the
Regulations. If I switch my
depreciable assets on hand
as at December 31, 1971 to
the Part XI method, does
this mean that when I sell
or dispose of them that I
will be subject to recapture
of depreciation on all the
amounts that were
previously claimed under
Part XVII?
Yes.
In valuing my farm proper-
ties ,for capital gains pur-
poses, should I make
separate valuations for my
residence and out
buildings?
A. Yes. It is advisable to

The February meeting of the.
Huron CoUnty Branch of the
Architectural -conservancy of
Ontario was held recently in
the board room of Victoria and
Grey Trust co„ .Goderich..
President Mrs, Joan Van Den
Broeck, presided.
She opened the meeting with
the announcement that the
Historic Sites and Monuments
Board of Canada have ap-
proved the designation of the
former Huron County Jail as
being of national architectural
significance for come
memoration by the erection of a
plaque.
Mrs, Elsa Haydon reported
that the proposal of the .Branch
concerning the administration
of the Jail by a board which
was submitted in October has
been approved in principle by
the Town of Gederich and is
now under consideration by the
Property Committee of County
Council.,
The president proposed that
in future a news letter be, sent
to each member before each
meeting. This was approved
and a committee composed of
the secretary, Syd Lawson and
K Larsen was put in charge of
this.
Ron Shaw, vice-president,
announced his resignation
because of his imminent depare
ture for Africa. On motion of
Mrs, Haydon, seconded by Mrs.
Dorothy Wallace, Nick Hill was
appointed to that position.
The remainder of the
meeting was devoted to a
discussion of the aims and ob-
jectives of the Huron County
Branch, One of these is to
broaden the scope- 'of the
Branch both in areas of interest
and in membership.
It was moved by Nick Hill,
seconded by Mrs. Wallace that
the Branch begin to list the
buildings of importance
historically and architecturally
in Huron County. It is proposed.
that part of each meeting be
turned into a workshop for the
consideration of slides of
buildings thought to be impore
tant by the members living in
each area who will submit the
slides.
In an attempt to become a
truly county-wide organivotion,
meetings will in future be held
in the different centres. The
March meeting will be at 8 p.m,
March 27 in Bayfield at the
Little Inn. Everyone interested
is welcome.
