Local office set for summer students
A tree soft maple estimated to be nearly 125-years-old, fell to the chain saws last week.
The tree, located on Orange Street between Princess and Rattenbury Streets was so sound
that it was picked up by a saw mill to be cut into lumber. (News-Record photo)

While .most of our winter
holidayers are returning from
the -higher temperatures and
lower gasoline reserves of
Florida - one Clintonien is
back from a',cold two weeks in
Labrador., Mrs. Henry' oung of
North Street has returned from
a visit with her son, Stewart,
his wife Patsy and their son
Marc who live in. Wabush,
Labrador, Mrs. Young reports
that the weather was extremely
,cold for a couple of days while
she was there with a windchill
factor equal to 85-90 degrees
below zero, Just prior to her
visit, the town, had experienced
a chill factor equalling 110
degrees below which resulted in
the closing of all normal
daytime activitiea. Wabush is
situated just three miles from
Labrador City which has a
population of 12,000 so Mrs.
Young's visit wasn't exactly to
the 'back of beyond' despite the
frigid temperatures.

"Flying down to Rio" - that

Never mind - that's exactly .
what these six did. Mr. and
Mrs. Alan Galbraith, Dr. and
Mrs. Frank Newland of Clinton
and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cor-
bett of Ailsa Craig are back af-
ter a two week holiday in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil. While there
they were able to meet and visit
with this writer's brother and
his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Taylor.

A large gathering numbering
97, including six children, 20
grandchildren, and nine great-
grandchildren, assembled at
the Orange Hall, Clinton on
February 23 to honour Mrs.
Melinda Nivins on the occasion
of her 77th birthday. Mrs.
Nivins a native of West
Wawanosh Township came to
Clinton 22 years ago. Guests at-
tended from Dungannon,
Lucknow, Kitchener ,
Bridgeport, Sudbury,
Hamilton, Londesboro, St.
Thomas, Goderich. as well as
Clinton. ***
We are pleased to report that
Mr. Lucien Bellefleur of High
Street is up and around now
feeling better. and ,witl,soon be
. returning home after being,
`hospitalized' in London.

The "World Day of Prayer"
for Clinton was held at St.
Jeseplf a Church on March 1st
with eight churches being well
represented. Ladies from each
group led in prayer and read
scriptural passages. The guest
speaker was Sister Mary of the
Eucharist from Zurich. St.
Joseph's school choir, ably con-
ducted by Miss Delaney, led the
congregation in singing the
hymns.

One of the nominees for the
recent title of'Farm Show Prin-
cess was Anne Stewart of RR 5,
Seaforth. Anne competed at the
Ontario Farrn Show against 18
other aspirants.

The regular meeting of the
Huronic Rebekah Lodge 'was
held on March 4 at 8 p.m. in
the Lodge Rooms. Mrs. Valena
Trewartha, Noble Grand, was
in charge of the meeting,
assisted by Vice-Grand Mrs.
Barbara Taylor. A Centennial
Committee was appointed. The
Lodge will be celebrating its
45th birthday early in 1975 -
further plans to be announced
later. The annual donation was
sent to the Ontario Eye
Research Program, I.O,O.F.

The Clinton Women's In-
stitute' met in the agriculture
board rooms on Feb, 28th and
had as their guests, leaders,
assistant leaders and mothers
of 4.11 girls.
A welcome was extended by
Mrs. C. Elliott to the visitors
and it being "International
Day", the roll call was an-
swered by "Where your an-
cestors came from",
Mrs. C. Elliott, president,
thanked the members .for their
help at the February birthday
party at Huronview. It was
voted to donate a prize for the
needlecraft section at Clinton
Spring Fair. West Huron
District Executive meeting will
be held April 3rd at 1;30 p.m.
in Auburn Community Hall to
make plans for 1974.75 year.
Mrs. C. Holland is convener
for the nominating committee
to bring in the new officers at
the March meeting.
Mrs. M. Batkin and Mrs. N.
Tyndall, leaders for the sewing
"New ideas for sewing with
knits", given by the home
economics service of the
ministry of agriculture,
outlined the course given. This
course is open to anyone in-
terested and will be held at the
agriculture board rooms Mon-
day March 11 from 1:30 p.m. to
4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. If
you are interested, contact Mrs.
N. Tyndall or Mrs. M. Batkin.
It was decided to hold a card
party in the town hall on
March • 15th from 2 to 4 p.m.
Members are to bring articles
for a draw; also bring a friend.

in Australia, The theme is "A
World to Share", The

remarks on projects carried on

sight for partially blind

Mrs, Margaret Thorndyke in-
troduced Mrs. B. Olde, who
showed slides and gave a very
interesting talk on Australia
where they had visited for 11
days last year. Australia is as
big as the United States in size
Several members of the Clin-
ton Figure Skating Club com-
peted on Sunday with members
of 16 other clubs in this area in
the annual inter-club com-
petition, The Clinton skaters
had some stiff competition but
they came home with a total of
8 medals.
The medal winners are as
follows: silver medalists in
novice dance, Marilyn Mair
and Lorie Blair; silver
medalists in junior dance,
Peggy Jones and Carolyn

Again this year, Canada
Manpower is establishing a
Canada Manpower Centre for
students in the Federal
Building on East Street,
Goderich, and Huron Park.
While the official opening will
be in April, 1974, the centre is
now operating for those
.students and employers
wishing to arrange summer em-
ployment now. John Gillespie
has been recently appointed,as
Student Placement Counsellor.
John is 26 years old, a graduate
of Sir Wilfrid Laurier Univer-
sity and 'resides in the Zurich
area,
One of the Centre's primary
responsibilities will be to
provide access for young people
to existing jobs, and for em-
ployers to available workers.
This will be done by: referral of
qualified persons to available
summer job opportunities.
(Visiting, informing and
soliciting job orders from area
employers); Soliciting job or-
ders from area employers;
Counselling students on how to
find summer employment;
Referring students to suitable
summer positions.
