The Citizen, 2008-11-27, Page 12PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2008. John and Sheila Nixon greeted worshippers at Knox United Church on Sunday, Nov. 23. Jim Barnes and Rev. John Roberts welcomed the congregation. The call to worship was followed by the congregation singing, Come Down, O Love Divine, accompanied by Elizabeth Procter. The Prayer of Confession was read in unison. The senior choir sang Dance with the Spirit. After the responsive reading Rev. Roberts read scripture from Colossians 3: 1-4, 12-17. After the singing of the children’s hymn, Child of Blessing, Child of Promise, the children adjourned to Sunday school and to get ready for the upcoming white gift service. Joyce Vincent, Clerk of Session, presented Sydney Jane Bromley, daughter of Matthew and Ashley Bromley to be baptized. Rev. Roberts baptized Sydney. Joyce lit a candle and presented it to Matthew and Ashley for Sydney to be lit on special occasions in Sydney’s life and also to remember her baptism. Sydney’s parents were also presented with a Bible. The congregation sang Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound accompanied by Elizabeth Procter. The sermon was based on baptism. There has always been a debate on faith and baptism. When a baby gets baptized it is the faith of the parents. Baptism has nothing to do whether or not people believe in God. It is a declaration or proclamation of the gift of God. Baptism expresses hope, and is a gift of God. Joan Vincent and Don Shiell took up the offering. This was followed by the singing of the offertory hymn, Your work, O God, Needs Many Hands. The closing hymn was Now Thank We All Our God. The United Church Women’s general meeting will be held on Thursday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the church basement. Pat Nolan, from the Food Bank, will be the guest. There will be special music.
