The Citizen, 2008-11-27, Page 2Winter wonderland remains with
us as I write, and since I try not to
listen to the weather reports I’m
liking the white fluffy stuff.
Santa is coming to Brussels on
Saturday at 5 p.m. and it just makes
his whole life better if there’s snow.
Besides Jim Lee is sending out the
word that carols will be sung at the
gazebo starting at 4:30 p.m. so a few
flakes would be good. Now that last
bit, take as you like but you’re still
invited to come and sing. The mood
will be set by the time you leave
Brussels Turnberry Street on
Saturday.
Check the paper for details of
Santa’s routine after the parade.
With the festive season, each
group offers its best for our
enjoyment. Churches and homes,
offices and schools will be
decorated. Music has been selected
and the practice has begun. Details
and concerns have been addressed
and the ads are out.
So all we have to do is figure for
ourselves which events we are
attending and then enjoy them as
much or more as the people who
offered us their best for Christmas.
Yes, John, Kathy and I had a good
time in Toronto at our Nurses
Association meeting – lots of
business, lots of horror stories of
reality in some places and lots of
new nurses in attendance with
enthusiasm and knowledge.
Healthcare like homes, businesses
and churches, will survive when
each player figures out how they
need to adjust to the world today.
So dig out all your warm duds and
get ready to celebrate the season.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A correction and congratulations
to the four Brussels Legion men who
won a Zone event last week. The
four men were participating in
cribbage not darts as reported last
week. Harry, Bob, John and Norm
will be advancing to District crib
play in the spring.
There are only three days left to
pay the early bird rate for your 2009
dues. Comrades have to pay their
dues by the end of November to
quality for the savings. The last early
bird winner was Sandra Josling and
there will be one more draw for the
month of November. Membership
chairman Greg Wilson would
appreciate all members’ co-
operation in paying their dues by the
end of December if possible.
The Thursday night darts had only
nine taking aim at the boards. The
first-place team was Roger McHardy
and Kaye Smith. In second were
Marlene Little, Catrina Josling and
Matthew McHardy. The high shot
was 121 by Roger.
Everyone is welcome to join in on
Thursday evenings for the blind
mixed darts.
The Friday night supper of
meatballs and rice had a small
turnout due to the nasty weather.
This week will be roast beef.
The Huron County men’s dart
league was at the Branch on
Saturday for their day’s play. There
were nearly 50 of them attending
and some report a good day of darts
and some report not being able to hit
a thing. A good day for most and a
great job by the Schmidt team in the
cleanup.
The Branch was where the
Hamilton family gathered on Sunday
to celebrate Christmas. There was
lots of food, lots of laughs and a
great time had by all attending.

Morris-Turnberry will investigate,
in time for implementing a new
policy in the new year, what other
municipalities do about deductions
for councillors who miss meetings.
Councillors, at their Nov. 18
meeting, decided on the approach
after mayor Dorothy Kelly raised
the issue, saying she felt councillors
should have part of their honorarium
deducted if they missed too many
meetings.
Councillor Mark Beaven said he
realized the issue was raised because
he had missed a number of meetings
this year due to personal issues and
said he had no problem with having
pay deducted if a councillor misses
two consecutive meetings.
But Beaven also argued the
honorarium is not just payment for
council meetings but for all the other
“stuff we don’t put in for”. He noted
that he had recently had several
meetings with ratepayers to hear
their concerns on various issues.
Councillor Paul Gowing agreed
saying pay for meetings is pay for
attendance but the honorarium is for
the other things that a councillor is
called on to do.
***
Councillors agreed to apply to the
Building Canada Fund for funds to
help with the estimated $780,000
cost of street improvements in
Lower Town, Wingham.
Also in Lower Town, Greg
Diamond, acting roads manager
said that a contractor had been hired
to help trim trees that were
encroaching on some roadways.
***
Councillors accepted “with
regret” the resignation of Barry
Mulvey as livestock evaluator and
fence-viewer.
***
Council held two closed sessions,
one prior to the meeting to discuss
employee issues and one at the end
of the meeting to discuss potential
litigation as well as personnel
issues.
