The Citizen, 2008-11-13, Page 12On Tuesday, Nov. 18 plan to attend the Women’s Institute meeting at 7:30 p.m. James Brown is the guest speaker. The community extends sincere sympathy to Sharon Cameron, James Ritchie, Tom Ritchie and families in the recent loss of their mother, Hazel Ritchie. A Night of a Thousand Dinners (potluck) will be held Nov. 15 at the Presbyterian Church in Brussels to raise funds for the Canadian Landmine Foundation. The guest speaker will be Brian Angyal who will talk about battle sites from the First and Second World Wars. Contact 887-9224 or 519-887-9831 for more information. Les Shaw greeted worshippers toKnox United Church, Belgrave, forthe Remembrance Sunday service,Nov. 9.Ron Taylor opened the serviceannouncing the two hymns andgiving a welcome to everyone. For the lighting of the candles of remembrance, Melissa Snyders arrived dressed as a housewife during the First World War, doing her laundry, and reminiscing the loss of her son. She had received a letter from him on Oct. 30, 1917, which had been written to her two days before he was killed. She then lit 10 candles, in memory of those from Belgrave who had lost their lives in the wars.The congregation joined inresponsively for the call to worshipand the opening hymn was sung.Mrs. Snyders then came back indressed as a newly-married woman,saying goodbye to her husband as he boarded a train to go to war. She was comforted by an older woman at the station as they watched the train disappear. The congregation then read the gathering prayer. The congregation moved around the sanctuary, offering the passing of the peace, to each other. The senior choir, accompanied by Elizabeth Procter, sang When Hands Reach Out and Fingers Trace, out ofthe new edition of More Voices. As the children’s hymn was sungand the children went to the front,Mrs. Snyders arrived back in thesanctuary as a nurse. She related the story to the children of the young soldier she was looking after, who had his legs shattered. She talked to them about Remembrance Day, and read a poem her son had brought home from school, about wearing a poppy. The children then went to Sunday school. Mrs. Snyders read the poem For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon written in 1914.The offering was received byNancy Folkard and Nancy Jardinand dedicated by singing theoffertory hymn.Melissa used the scripture she hadread, 1 Thessalonians 4 as the basis for her meditation. A moment of silence was observed, The Last Post was played and everyone joined in the singing of O’ Canada. The benediction, Go Now In Peace was sung and the congregation filed out in silence after placing their poppy at the cross. (Vicky Bremner photo) Hymns begin Knox United service The Evening Unit of the Belgrave UCW was held on Tuesday evening at the home of Pat Hunking. Donna Shaw’s group was in charge and she welcomed everyone and thanked Pat. She read a poem, Let Us Remember. Laura Johnston opened the worship with the poem In Flanders Fields and offered prayer. The hymn, Faith of Our Fathers was sung, followed by scripture. Laura read the meditation on remembrance. Following the offering, she closed the worship with prayer. The minutes were read and adopted, and the roll call was answered by seven members and two guests. Pat announced that she had sent six cards. Muriel Coultes gave the treasurer’s report which was approved. The general meeting of the UCW was announced for Thursday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m. with Pat Nolan from the Wingham Food Bank as speaker. It was approved that the Evening Group donate $300 to the Wingham and District Hospital Foundation. Mrs. Shaw introduced Kathy Douglas, diaconal minister, now living in Blyth who told the group about the process of becoming a diaconal minister, and the difference between ordination and being diaconal. Kathy received her education at the Centre for Christian Studies, in Winnipeg. Kathy has been called into the position of Youth Worker for Huron-Perth Presbytery, and she gave several examples of some of the groups that have already taken shape, and are now holding events throughout the Presbytery. The closest one to Belgrave will be a sleepover called CSI Fordwich in early December for Grades 6-7-8. More information will be coming out later. The December meeting of the Evening Unit will be held at the home of Muriel Coultes. Everyone was reminded to bring an item for the Christmas Bureau.This will be a Christmas meeting and everyone is invited. The meeting closed with the benediction, grace and a social time around the kitchen table.
