For the lighting of the candles of
remembrance, Melissa Snyders
arrived dressed as a housewife
during the First World War, doing
her laundry, and reminiscing the loss
of her son.
She had received a letter from him
on Oct. 30, 1917, which had been
written to her two days before he
was killed. She then lit 10 candles, in
memory of those from Belgrave who
had lost their lives in the wars. The congregation joined inresponsively for the call to worshipand the opening hymn was sung.Mrs. Snyders then came back indressed as a newly-married woman, saying goodbye to her husband as he
boarded a train to go to war. She was
comforted by an older woman at the
station as they watched the train
disappear.
The congregation then read the
gathering prayer.
The congregation moved around
the sanctuary, offering the passing of
the peace, to each other.
The senior choir, accompanied by
Elizabeth Procter, sang When Hands
Reach Out and Fingers Trace, out ofthe new edition of More Voices. As the children’s hymn was sungand the children went to the front,Mrs. Snyders arrived back in thesanctuary as a nurse. She related the story to the
children of the young soldier she
was looking after, who had his legs
shattered.
She talked to them about
Remembrance Day, and read a poem
her son had brought home from
school, about wearing a poppy.
The children then went to Sunday
school.
Mrs. Snyders read the poem For
the Fallen by Laurence Binyon
written in 1914.The offering was received byNancy Folkard and Nancy Jardinand dedicated by singing theoffertory hymn.Melissa used the scripture she hadread, 1 Thessalonians 4 as the basis
for her meditation. A moment of
silence was observed, The Last Post
was played and everyone joined in
the singing of O’ Canada.
The benediction, Go Now In
Peace was sung and the
congregation filed out in silence
after placing their poppy at the cross.

Whitmore will conduct the service at
