The Citizen, 2008-10-16, Page 8SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2008. The Brussels Atoms Reps played their first exhibition game this past Saturday. It was held in Goderich. Brussels was keen to hit the ice and light up the scoreboard. Wyatt Machan, assisted by Kailey Wheeler and Nic Zwep, scored in the first 19 seconds of the game to take the lead. Halfway through the first, Logan Kellington lifted the puck at the blue line and sent it soaring past all the players including the Goderich goalie to make it 2-0. The play continued back and forth between both teams, then Zwep had a “one- timer” from the far side to end the first at 3-0 for Brussels. Second period saw the players switch ends and Goderich was able to tie the game, then take a 4-3 lead. In the third period, Delayna Smith carried the puck down the ice, flanked by Goderich players on each side, to tie it up again. The play was fierce between both sides as each made several attempts to score. It was a rebound from Smith that saw Dawson Peachey score to make it 5-4. With just two minutes left on the clock, Goderich pulled their goalie. The play was at the Brussels end. Brussels defence worked hard to clear it out of the Brussels end. Machan was able to get a hold of it and scored on the empty net. Brussels held Goderich off for the last minute of play and skated off with a 6-4 victory. Playing a very strong defence so far this season are Connor Bridge, Kieran Jared, Sean Mitchell and Seth Nichol. Coming up from the local league for this game were Wheeler and Dylan McNeil. In net this season is Derrick Waechter, who made 14 saves throughout the game. On the bench this season are coach Charles Corbett, assistant Kevin Kellington and Andrew Baker. Also helping out for the first game was Dwayne Waechter. The Atom Reps play at home the next three Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Come out and watch. It may be surprising to some, but there are people in Huron County who go hungry because they can’t afford healthy food.” Janice Dunbar, community developer with the Huron County Health Unit, says poverty is an issue in Huron County. Dunbar has organized a food drive as part of World Food Day on Oct. 16. County of Huron employees are being asked to bring in non- perishable food for donation to local food banks. Community members are also encouraged to make donations. Dunbar says many people use the nine food banks in Huron County. Almost 7,000 families or individuals used the food banks in 2005, the last time information was collected. “Four per cent of Huron County residents don’t have access to healthy food. It might be because of rising grocery costs or the lack of transportation to grocery stores or food banks. Some people might also go without because of the stigma in small towns of using a food bank.” Huron County warden John Bezaire is pleased the county is taking part in World Food Day. “Huron County is a great place to live but we also need to recognize any level of poverty is unacceptable. This is an opportunity to raise awareness that everyone has a role to play in addressing poverty issues.” Food drop off locations are: County of Huron Social Services Building, Clinton; Health and Library Complex, Clinton; County of Huron Administration offices, Goderich; Clinton Friends of the Community, 80 Albert St.; Clinton Salvation Army, 18 Albert St., Clinton; Exeter Community Food Bank, c/o Exeter Pentecostal Tabernacle Main St. South, behind Noah’s Ark, Goderich Salvation Army, 104 The Square, Goderich; St. Vincent De Paul Society, 441 MacEwan St., Goderich; Seaforth and District Food Bank, 72 Main St., Seaforth; North Huron Food Share, Wingham (Behind Home Video); Salvation Army, 205 Josephine St., Wingham; Zurich Blessings Community Store, 45 Main St.West, Zurich. Not on issues specifically, but literally. Councillors are taking the downsizing challenge along with members of the recreation department and other staff. Melissa Scott, fitness and aquatic co-ordinator at the fitness centre in Wingham, said that the idea began when some employees at the centre were looking to lose some weight. “They wanted motivation, so the idea came up that we involve all of the rec department,” said Scott. Then the gauntlet was thrown out to council and any other North Huron staff who might be looking to either drop a few pounds or increase their fitness level. A total of 38 have picked that gauntlet up. “Everyone’s goals are different. Some are looking to maintain or increase their activity, while others want to lose weight. They have all been weighed in and the program ends Dec. 14,” said Scott, adding that once in participants can’t quit. Go girl! North Huron councillor Alma Conn is on a mission as she, along with other members of council and North Huron staff take on the downsizing challenge to lose weight and get fit.
