The Citizen, 2008-09-18, Page 8SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2008.The Huron Perth Lakers AAA
Major PeeWees hosted the Guelph
Storm on Sept. 8 at the St. Marys
Pyramid Centre for an exhibition
game.
The Lakers earned a well deserved
6-3 victory. Eric Ryan was given the
start in net.
Ryan was tested partway into the
game and responded with a pair of
good saves using the glove and left
pad.
Seven minutes into the game
Garrett James collected the puck in
his own zone from Bayley Boyes and
led a rush into the Storm’s end zone
then sent a shot towards the net
which caromed in off a Storm
defenseman giving the Lakers a 1-0.
Seconds later Carter Stewart and
Derek Elliott worked together to keep
the puck in the offensive zone.
Roland McKeown found the loose
puck, fought off a Storm defender
and fired a pinpoint accurate shot into
the Storm net falling to one knee.
Late in the first period Fraiser
Lewis started a rush chipping the
puck off the wall to winger
McKenzie Carter. He carried the
puck wide down the left wing and
found a streaking Keigan Goetz in
front of the Storm goalie who netted
the Lakers’ third goal.
The second period was a different
story as the Lakers were pushed back
onto their heals and the Storm
counted two goals closing the score
to 3-2. Ryan needed to make two
super saves six minutes into the
period to take some of the pressure
off.
The third period proved to be
decisive for the Lakers as they pulled
away from the Storm. The Lakers
started a man down and Eric Thomas,
now in goal, was called upon early to
keep the Lakers in front.
McKeown found James moving
through the neutral zone and he drove
a shot off the cross bar. Gregory
Swan was going hard to the net and
pushed the rebound into the net. At
the 10-minute mark Swan fed the
puck to James from the corner. James
fired a long shot at the net which
ended up buried in the top corner
making the score 5-2.
The Storm answered with a
powerplay goal but the Lakers
continued to carry the period play.
With three minutes left Swan fed
hard-shooting McKeown who loaded
up a shot that found the back of the
net.
Guelph continued to push ahead
but Thomas stopped a breakaway and
made a huge glove save late in the
game to keep the final score at 6-3
The Lakers hosted the Sun County
Panthers on Sept. 14 in Zurich. They
continued a trend of starting the
game on a slow note. The Panthers on
the other hand came out flying. This
combination led to play being in the
Lakers’ zone for most of the first
period. Goalie Ryan needed to be
sharp early in the game as he made
back-to-back pad saves.
At the seven-minute mark the
Panthers notched their first goal on
an odd man rush. Minutes later a hard
long shot put the Panthers up 2-0. As
the pressure mounted Ryan made two
great saves, one with the right pad
and then one with the left toe
extended. In the last minute of the
first period the Panthers struck again
pushing the score to 3-0.
The Panthers made the score 4-0
on a nice play that resulted in a goal
off a rebound in the second.
From the five-minute marker to
about the 12-minute marker of the
second period the Lakers dominated
with some good forechecking but
again could not find the back of the
net. With seconds remaining Ryan
made his best save of many as he
gloved a sure goal to keep his team
within striking distance.
Despite playing the Panthers near
even for two periods the Lakers’slow
start had put them too far behind by
the final period to fight back.
For Lakers it’s win and lose
