The Citizen, 2008-09-11, Page 8The Huron Perth Lakers AAA Major PeeWees took to the road on Sept. 5 and competed in the Mississauga Senators hockey tournament. The four games at a higher level of competition were needed as the team continues to develop early in the season. Lakers 2 Hamilton Bulldogs 0 First up for the Lakers were the OMHA Hamilton Bulldogs. Eric Ryan was given the start in goal and he played a superb game. There were several end-to-end plays in the first period but both goalies were very sharp. Derek Elliott was in all alone early in the game only to have the Bulldog goalie make a great save. Not to be outdone Ryan had several key saves midway through the period to keep the score tied at zero. At the eight- minute mark Carter Stewart chipped the puck deep to winger Taylor Moir who feathered a pass to Keigan Goetz and Goetz jammed the puck over the goalie for the first goal. Both teams ran into penalty trouble in the second period which slowed the game down. Late in the second defenseman Ryan Stulp- Jacobson moved the puck to partner Frasier Lewis who found a speeding Nathan Templeman down the wing. Templeman cut to the net and found the corner to push the score to 2-0. Ryan put on a tremendous puck stopping display in the third period sealing the victory and a well deserved shut out. Lakers 5 Tampa Bay Lightning 5 After a very long layoff the Lakers were back on the ice against the Lightning. Cole Thomas was asked to man the goal for the game against this high flying American team. The Lightning got on the board first at the three-minute mark. At the 12- minute marker Roland McKeown scored a highlight-reel goal as he picked off an errant pass at their blue line, faked the defenseman left, went right and ripped a shot into the net tying the score at 1. With time running out Gregory Swan forced the play to Bayley Boyes who made a back pass to Stewart. Stewart fired a high screen shot which found the net for a 2-1 lead. A couple of minutes into the second period the Lightning tied the game with a power play goal and followed quickly with two more to make the score 4-2. Not a team to quit the Lakers rallied back. Swan and Stewart teamed up on the power play getting the puck to Templeman who found the back of the net. Late in the second the Lakers tied the score at four again on the power play with Alex Peters setting up Taylor Moir who made a nifty move to score. In the third period the Lakers took the lead 5-4 as Goetz fed defenseman Peters at the blue line who let go a drive that caught the goalie off guard. With the action going end to end Thomas was called upon to keep his team in the game with many key saves especially as the Lakers killed a two man disadvantage half way through the third. The Lightning kept pushing forward and finally tied the game at 5-5 with a minute left to play. Mississauga Rebels 7 Lakers 0 A combination of a few items led to a lopsided score in this game. The coaching staff agreed that the items are ones that can be worked through. The Rebels are one of the best teams in the Greater Toronto Area and played an exceptional game. On the other hand the Lakers did not bring their best game to the arena on this day and left goalie Ryan to fend for himself many times. As the game wore on the Lakers seemed to get their vaunted team play rolling and played the Rebels even in the third period. There were only three minor penalties called in this fast paced game…a game the team can gauge their continued development against. Lakers 6 Mississauga Reps 2 After a short rest Coach Goetz brought his team together knowing that this was a must win to have any hope of moving on to the playoff round. Goalie Thomas looked sharp early. Two minutes into the game Garrett James and Elliott set up McKeown for a power play marker. Minutes later Templeman and McKenzie Carter dug the puck out to Swan in the slot who buried the second goal. Next up was McKeown setting up Elliott for the third goal. At the midway point Thomas made a very good save on a two-on-one to keep the score 3-0. With one minute left in the first Peters and Stulp Jacobson played tic tac toe and finally set up McKeown who smartly walked from the corner and went top glove for the Lakers’ fourth goal. With seconds remaining in the first period Carter banked a pass to James who blasted a shot on net. Moir quickly jammed the rebound in upping the score to 5- 0. The second period saw Thomas stop a breakaway and then hold the fort as the Lakers killed a two man disadvantage along with the Reps pulling their goalie to add the sixthskater for a whole minute. In the third the Reps scored two goals but did not manage any sustained pressure. The Lakers sealed the game with two minutes to go as Boyes found Swan cutting to the net and he deflected an accurate shot into the net making the final score 6-2. Despite having a respectable record of 2-1-1 the Lakers were denied a trip to the playoff round. The team gave a solid effort and came home with many good team memories. They also brought home a few items in hand to work on in their upcoming games and practices. Next up for the Major PeeWees is a game against the Guelph Storm on Sept. 8 in St. Marys at 7 pm. SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2008.PeeWee Lakers play in Mississauga tournament It was that time again for the Londesborough Angels to host their annual charity co-ed tournament held on Sept. 5 - 6 at the Londesborough diamond. This year’s charity was for the CT scanner of Huron County Diagnostic Imaging Campaign. The cheering started at 7:30 p.m. on Friday as teams went head to head to compete for the A champ title. After an evening and full day of fun, easygoing baseball Root for Rudy team took the A championship with Laura’s Lads and Lassies taking the A runner up. The B championship went to the Mighty Oakes with a close second going to the Lucky 13ths. The Angels in the Outfield took the C championship with the runner up being The Buck Stops Here. The Angels were thrilled with the support they received with this tournament, including all participating teams, Karen and Doug Dolmage, Louis Greidanus and the Municipality of Central Huron. Without their support, they wouldn’t have been able to raise the $1,437 for the CT scanner. The Angels are hoping to be able to continue this worthwhile tournament. (Vicky Bremner photo) The Blyth Barons continue to keep summer alive with exciting fastball action. On Sept. 3 the team travelled to Exeter and suffered a loss. Darcey Cook was on the hill for Blyth. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second when Exeter got on the board with two runs on three hits. The Barons got a run in the fourth that began when Shawn Bromley and Pat Cronin waited out walks to get on base. A wild pitch allowed Bromley to score. In the bottom of the inning Exeter two a two-run lead again with one batter crossing the plate. A good fifth inning for Blyth tightened the score considerably. After Steve Cook’s single, Darcey Cook was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. A single by Ryan Clancy brought Steve home, then Mike McDonald singled and Bromley walked making the run-count two and the score tied at three apiece. Two Exeter singles in the bottom of the sixth put them back in the lead by a score of 5-3. Darcey Cook led off the seventh with a solid double. McDonald walked and Cook managed to score on a wild pitch, but it wasn’t enough as the Barons took a 5-4 defeat. It was another loss Sept. 5 when the team went to play Belmore. Scott Bromley was on the mound for the Barons. He gave up one run on a hit and two walks in the first. There was no more scoring until the bottom of the fourth, when Belmore cashed in three runs on three hits and two errors for a commanding 4-0 lead. The Barons managed one run in the fifth to get on the scoreboard. Mike Bromley walked, then McDonald stroked a double to bring him home. Unfortunately, Belmore added one as well in the bottom half of the inning and again in the sixth. The game ended 6-1 in favour of Belmore.
