The Citizen, 2008-08-28, Page 29Representatives from the BelgraveKinsmen were on hand at the Aug.18 meeting of North Huorn councilto discuss a future project. Chris Michie explained that a new floor is badly needed at the arena. “The job would be to rip out the boards and concrete, put in new fill and do a new concrete floor.” They have an early estimate of $85,000, he said. “I guess we’re here tonight, first to ask permission and second to look for money.” “Glad you saved that for last,” joked councillor Archie MacGowan. Michie stated that they had no idea at this point what they might be looking for from North Huron. “We will be meeting to look at that,” he said adding that they will also berequesting support from Morris-Turnberry. Chad McKee, who is the incomingpresident and also serves on thearena board, said that the board hadpassed a motion to support the project at their August meeting. Deputy-reeve Murray Scott expressed his approval. “This has been on my wish list for 20 years.” He noted that long-range planning for the arena, along with how to make it more viable should be considered. Michie said the big use now for the facility is buck and does. Fixing the floor, he said, will ensure against injury at these types of functions. “We’re eliminating potential liability,” he said, adding that there are several areas where the floor has lifted or heaved. Also, he added, “we hope thatwhen the floor’s insulated the icewill be better.”McKee said another option is touse the new floor for rollerskating.Councillor James Campbellwondered how firm the $85,000 price tag was. Michie said at this point there are a lot of variables not factored in, one in the community’s favour. “As you know with Belgrave a project gets a lot of volunteer work.” In response to councillor Alma Conn’s question about fundraising, Michie said that with any big project something would have to be done. “We will be getting a committee together for possibilities.” Mention was made about one of the walls at the arena and MacGowan wondered if by fixing the floor they may run into a problem with the integrity of thewalls. “We felt it would be good to do thewall at the same time and the arenaboard is going ahead with that,” saidMichie. Councillor Greg McClinchey asked about the timeline for the project. Michie said it would be either before winter or in the spring, depending on quickly they could get things in place. Council didn’t have much to offer without numbers, however. MacGowan asked the group to keep council posted and come back when they had a figure. McClinchey agreed. “From a notion perspective I like the idea.” Like Scott had implied, MacGowan wondered if they should be looking at a five or seven-year plan. “Then we know what needs to get done or is slated to get done.”Snell said director offacilities/recreation Pat Newson islooking at putting money away forcapital expenditures. Darrell Weber wonderd if theremight be Trillium funding for the project. Snell explained that the township is only allowed one Trillium project at a time, and because the township owns the arena it would qualify as one of their projects. “We have a lot of projects on the hopper right now so it would be up to council to prioritize.” However, Snell said there may be a way that the Kinsmen could apply if they entered into a lease agreement for the building, similar to what Blyth Festival has. This option is going to be investigated. By Jo-Ann McDonald It was another busy weekend at the Brussels Legion Branch and I guess that is why it seems that the summer has flown by so fast. On Saturday the Branch had cards, the fish fry crew away and a wedding. There were 12 tables of card players. The first-place team was Ed Stewart and Glenn Sellers with 76 points. Coming in second were Joann MacDonald and Dorothy Carter with 75 points and winning the third place prize were Marie Stute and Joanne Machan with 70 points. The cards could have been kinder to Willis and Betty who won low prize with 48 points. The lone-hand prizes went to Ethel and to Ray Gilders for the men. Cards are every two weeks. Cards are looked after by Comrades Leona McDonald and Marg Bennett. The crew was off to Hensall Legion to do a fish fry for them. The Hensall Branch is a very small Branch, but had a good turnout of just over 100 people. The three- person crew included Comrades Rick and Scott McDonald and Alicia Dick who were quite capable to handle the event. The next fry is at our own Branch in September for the elimination draw. The third event of the weekend was the wedding dinner and reception for newlyweds Jake and Denise Atkinson. The wedding was held at the Armstrong farm on a very warm summer’s day, then over 100 guests arrived at the Branch for the remainder of the day. The dinner was managed by Comrades Jo-Ann McDonald, Deb Cann, Cora Alcock, John Lowe, Nancy Ducharme and community service hours helpers, Fauve and Brianne den Dekker. Prep helpers included Lloyd and Mabel Glanville, Helen Dobson and Julia Mason. The Sunday night dance, featuring the band the Country Versatiles, was well attended by nearly 100 folks. Dances are every two weeks at 7 p.m. In less than two weeks it’s the early bird draws for the elimination draw. Get your ticket from the Branch, comrades or drop in at Murray’s Barbershop or George of Brussels. The fall is almost upon us and so is the early bird membership campaign. Beginning in September, Comrades can pay their dues for the 2009 year. Keep watching for some ideas and draws. Membership in the Royal Canadian Legion is open to Canadian citizens who have the desire to aid their fellow man for their service to our country in the past, present and in the future. It is an organization committed to remembering the sacrifices of the many who serve our country to ensure the freedoms that we enjoy today. It is also an organization that supports the youth of today in many different ways, such as sports and public speaking programs, school awards and Cadet programs. The Brussels Legion also tries to support many local fund- raising efforts, the local hospitals and local sports programs and charities as well as maintaining a viable building in the Brussels community. If anyone is interested in joining the Brussels Legion contact the Branch or membership chairman Greg Wilson. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2008. PAGE 29.
