On Thursday veal sold on a steady market. Lambs, sheep and goats also sold on a steady market. On Friday calves and yearlings sold on a steady market. There were 144 steers on offer. It was great weather for the Huron County Plowing Match held at Henry and MaryAnn Grobbink’s farm at Walton last week. Thursday was Junior Day with 11 juniors plowing and 12 young women vying for the Princess crown. When the dust settled Brandon McGavin took top honours and also won the Ross Gordon trophy. Michele Studhalter of RR 2, Blyth was crowned the princess. Organizers were pleased by the great turnout of young people for Junior Day. Friday saw 32 lands being plowed and eight queen lands and several novelty lands. Melissa Sparling is the Huron County Queen of the Furrow for 2008 and 2009 with Amber Jeffery runner up. Top plow Queen was Sara Baker. Emily Moore won the Miss Friendship award. Jacob McGavin was junior champion with his cousin Brandon McGavin winning reserve. Not to be outdone Brandon’s father Brian McGavin was senior champion with Paul Dodds as reserve. The novelty class was won by Harry Nesbitt. Other winners were: warden’s award, David Grobbink; McGavin family award, Eugenia Pentland; Don Dodds award, Brian Davenport, Grey County; Val-Lea Farms award, Eugenia Pentland; MGM Townsend Tire award, Kevin Honey, Darryl O’Rourke; best going horse plowing team, John DeKroon; champion horse plowman, Brian MacDonald; antique tractor awards, restored - Reid family, W6 International; unrestored - Dave Makas, 77 Oliver; The champion antique plowman was Willis Wardell from Middlesex and reserve was George Townsend. Approximately 300 people enjoyed a pork chop - chicken supper with a live auction and silent auction ending the day. UPCOMING SALES Plowing for the crown Sara Baker of Brussels, threw her hat into the ring for Huron County’s Queen of the Furrow last week at the county’s plowing match.
