The Citizen, 2008-08-28, Page 8SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2008.The Major PeeWee Lakers opened
their 2008 fall schedule with a one
week training camp in Goderich.
Coach Todd Goetz put his team
through a tough, educational and fun
week of on ice and off ice training.
The team certainly pulled together
spending one week together and this
time will certainly pay dividends in
the future.
On Sunday Aug. 24 the Lakers
traveled to Ayton to begin their
exhibition season to play the Grey
Bruce Highlanders. The Lakers
started the game a little slower then
expected but after a couple of shifts
they shifted gears and began to take
the play to the Highlanders.
Cole Thomas got the start in goal
and had to be sharp early in the
game.
Once the Lakers got rolling their
forechecking was too much for the
Highlanders. At the mid-way point
in the first period Roland McKeown
made a smart read and jumped on a
loose puck at the blue line.
McKeown proceeded to tee up a
hard shot that the Grey Bruce goalie
quickly directed to the corner.
Moments later some good fore
checking by Baley Boyes and
Gregory Swan put some pressure on
the Highlanders. The puck was
pushed to Garrett James who
boomed a shot on net. Nathan
Templeman was quick to pounce on
the rebound and tuck the puck into
the net.
With time ticking down in the first
period a Highlander forward made a
good play cutting towards the net
and put a high glove shot into the net
tying the score at one each. The
Lakers found themselves killing off
a penalty to start the second period.
Some excellent penalty killing
working as a unit kept the
Highlanders off the board.
Six minutes into the second period
the Lakers won an offensive face off

before the start of the tournament,
Doig was busy organizing
accommodations for the players,
preparing volunteers and finishing up
last minute details that she hopes will
make the event a success.
Last week all of Stratford’s hotels
were filled with players, Doig said,
so they began to check players into
Goderich and Bayfield’s hotels.
The Canadian Tour features
players from 15 different countries
including Canada and boasts such
alumni as Mike Weir, Stuart Appleby,
Michael Campbell, Steve Stricker,
Tom Lehman, Stephen Ames and
Todd Hamilton to name a few.
While Doig says she isn’t too
familiar with many of the names
currently making the rounds on the
tour, she is certain that she’ll know
them five years from now.
“People might say they don’t know
anyone on the Canadian Tour, but
people didn’t know about Mike Weir
when he hadn’t played outside of
Ontario either,” she said. “You
haven’t heard of these guys yet.
These are all young players who are
chasing the dream and they haven’t
got there yet, but they’re going to get
there.”
The Classic is offering up a purse
of $150,000 to be divided from the
winner all the way down to the last
golfer who made the cut. However,
the most important number is half of
all money raised through the Classic
will be going straight to the Huron
and Perth Hospital Foundation.
Doig says she is expecting
somewhere between 10,000 and
15,000 people to visit the club
throughout the week, not to mention
the 156 players and their 156 caddies
and over 220 volunteers, with weekly
passes going for just $20, $10 of
which will go directly to the Huron
and Perth Hospital Foundation.
As of Aug. 22, over 6,000 tickets
had been sold, with Doig still hopeful
to see 2,000 to 3,000 additional
people come through the gates for the
tournament. The collection process
from local golf courses, however,
will be underway until the Thursday
tee-off.
The town of Seaforth has really
backed the tournament, Doig says.
Over the weekend, the main street
was decorated in anticipation of the
thousands of visitors coming to
watch the competition.

enter playoffs. The squad met Mildmay at home on Sunday
night. The visitors celebrated a resounding victory this
time. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Fun and games
The Brussels slo-pitch winners for the women this year
were The Chicksters. The winners are determined by a
point system throughout the season. This past weekend,
however, the teams faced off in a year-end tournament.

A hit parade
It was tournament time in Blyth this past weekend as the
women took to the field. Blyth’s Unpredictables played
Holmesville in a high-scoring effort, taking the game by a
score of 19-18. Sandy Bos gets set to lob it in. (Vicky Bremner
