the trip with some rain on the last
couple of days.
It was a wonderful trip with many
old friends and some new friends
made as well, reports Rene.
We have a gold medalist in our
community. Joan Perrie was a
participant in the Activefest Senior
Games held in London at the
London University Aug. 12 – 14 at
the new aquatic centre. She was
participating in the 200-metre
prediction swim. A prediction sport
is when you are not swimming
against other swimmers but you
predict the time in which you will
complete the event and the closest
prediction is the winner.
Joan predicted her swim to take
six minutes, 21 seconds and she was
2.1 seconds and 2.09 seconds off her
mark in her two timed swim over the
two days to earn her the gold medal.
There were over 1,200 participants
in the varying events held.
Activefest is held every other year
and is a government-sponsored
program. There were participants
from all over Ontario such as
Ottawa, Wawa and Kapuskasing.
Joan received a tree-shaped
engraved wine bottle stopper for her
gold medal finish.
The Walton Hall was busy in the
last couple of weeks. The first
special occasion was the open house
party for Lavern Hoegy’s 80th
birthday. Family, friends and
neighbours dropped by to wish him
happy birthday. A wonderful
afternoon was enjoyed by all.
The second event was the McCall
family reunion. It was a special one
this year as it was the 50th
anniversary. President Murray
McCall welcomed the nearly 75
people in attendance. The other
committee members were Steve
Burke, vice, and Sheila Bauer,
secretary-treasurer in charge of
organizing this year’s special event.
Many of those attending brought
along the old family albums that
were enjoyed by all to look at.
Relatives attended from Colorado,
Kansas, England and across Ontario.
Games and food are always a big
part of the day and there was plenty
of everything. A special event for the
day was the presentation of gifts of
paintings to many family members.
Clara McCall Perrie was an
accomplished artist and painter and
had a collection of paintings. Her
family thought it fitting to present 50
paintings for the 50th anniversary to
the relatives and did so throughout
the day
Home for a visit was Carali
McCall and her friend Daniel. She
was able to attend the McCall
reunion as well as catching up with
many Storey relatives. They even
had time to drop into motocross,
where I was able to say hello to them
for a moment as they went to view
the races. Murray and Sherry
McCall, as always, were happy to
have their long distance family home
for a visit.
A special birthday party for a
special number was held in Bayfield
last weekend. Joan Perrie celebrated
that magic number that makes her a
confirmed senior. Attending the
party were members of both the
Brussels Pipe Band and members of
the Clinton Band. They had an
enjoyable afternoon together at the
Perrie cottage.
Home for a visit was Blaine
Hackwell with Mert and Doreen
Hackwell. Blaine lives in Milwaukee
and enjoys getting home even if it’s
only for a short visit.
Returning from a holiday in the
east are Jack and Donna Knight.
They drove to Quispamsis, New
Brunswick to visit for more than a
week, with daughter Joanne and
Weldon, Andrew and Allison. They
drove to Montreal and then headed
southeast into the States on the way
there. They travelled through
Vermont and Maine and saw
beautiful scenery but found the roads
were terrible.
Arriving in Quispamsis, a suburb
of Saint John, it was time to put Jack
to work with many little odd jobs.
While they were there, it wasn’t
only work, there was lots of fun too.
They went to see grandson Andrew’s
team play a game of hardball.
Andrew plays first base.
They also went to see Allison’s
horseback riding lessons.
They went to see the Fundy Trail
that is being built for a beautiful
driving trail to connect to Fundy
National Park. They had the
opportunity to see three large cruise
ships come into the Saint John
harbour as well.
It has been over two years since
their last visit to Joanne and
Weldon’s and they really noticed the
building boom in the area. There’s a
great deal more housing and lots
more shopping facilities. It’s not
only the west that is booming it
seems. It was a really good visit and
too soon it was time to leave for
home. They came home via Canada
and found the roads were much
better.
They report a great time away but
it’s always nice to be home. It didn’t
take Jack long to go out to the farm
to visit with his old friend Ben and to
check on things.
Finishing off his summer holidays
at Grandpa Howard Hackwell’s was
young Sebastian Andredes with
mom Patricia. Grandpa and
Sebastian went fishing a couple of
times at a local spot and finally
caught a fish, a nice 12-inch trout,
his first fish. He was quite excited
and insisted the head be left, so dad
could see how big it was.
They also spent time going school
shopping in Goderich and visiting
Uncle Elliott.
The Brussels Walton ladies slo-
pitch league held its year-end fun
tournament on the weekend. The
first games of the tournament were
held on Thursday evening in all of
the parks, then the rest of the
tournament games were held on the
Brussels diamonds on Saturday. The
day is just for fun as the winner of
the league is decided by the year-end
standings.
Walton Wonders had a good year
but were not the winners.
Dressing up is the fun of the
weekend. Walton was dressed as
Retro Walton players wearing
uniforms of the previous teams back
to the 80s. The RBIs were
hillbillies/rednecks, the TFA team
were dressed as nuns, the Twisted
Sisters were dressed as Little Devils,
the Belgrave Classics were Cowboys
and Invalids, the Kittens and
Cougars team were hillbillies, the
Young Guns were Halloween early,
the Bookies team were Pirates and I
missed seeing the rest of the teams.
Celebrating birthdays last week
were Terri Gulutzen, Pat Nolan,
Bradley Shortreed, Viola Travis,
Blaine Hackwell, Cheryl Lee, Sarah
Fraser, Kelly Hackwell, Brent
Godkin, Mary Huether, Sandra
Zwep, Stephen Ryan and Sharon
Pryce.
