Aren’t holidays just the best part
of summer? Well, also the best part
of fall or winter too, I guess.
Anyway holiday time in our lives
was much better than expected. Phil
was home from Whitecourt, Alberta
for a while so that took some of theplacidness out of our lives. Whilethat visit was coming to a close, weorganized a few days of camping atAlliston with the family. We nowknow that you can feed 10 peopleinside a trailer in a rain storm andeveryone survives. The newest member of our clanmade her entrance on Aug. 7. That
would be the night after the cosy
supper and two weeks early. Curtis
and Julie have adjusted their lives to
welcome Miss Ella Jennie Margaret
Graber with open arms. If she’s half
the lady of her namesake we will be
one lucky family. Our other Ella died
in December of last year and this
wee lady is doing a good job offilling that spot. After checking the state of theparents and the digits of Ella, Ralphand I headed to Hallville for a 75party. That’s what we called a 50thbirthday for Beth and a 25thwedding anniversary for brother Jimand Beth. Lots of family and friends, great
weather and one very surprised
sister-in-law.
Then on up the St. Lawrence to La
Malbaie, to Sheila Richards’Quebec
summer house. There’s something
very special about holidays, being
able to brush your teeth while
scanning the St. Lawrence for ships.
Needless to say we had a greattime as Sheila’s guests. A Zodiactour and seeing four of the five kindsof whales that reside just up the roadwas pretty awesome. A 25-tonnehumpback just behind our vesselwas enough to give pause to thepossibilities of swimming in the St.Lawrence.An overnight in Barrie to see that
baby Ella was coping with her new
parents and we were ready for home
again.
All appeared calm on our return
with the students making last week
plans of going and doing before
September takes over.
The death of Laurie Black turned
our thoughts to the harsh realities of
life and how his role as Marg’s
husband, as well as father and
brother will uproot many good
memories for his family and friends.
Laurie’s quiet, pleasant manner is
one of those good memories.
The Armstrong gang seems to be
getting quite experienced at tent
weddings. I’m sure Jim would
accommodate your hitching plans.
Enjoy these last precious days of
August.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Better safe
Last week Huron County trained employees at Huronlea Home for the Aged on its brand new
defibrillator. Once defibrillators were introduced as publicly-accessible, several areas saw
provincially-funded defibrillators installed in local arenas. This second round of funding saw
more machines installed into other public buildings like Huronlea. Cory Young, left, works with
Steve Cook, right, on this training victim while Todd Martin of the Huron County EMS looks
on. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
