The Citizen, 2008-08-21, Page 3THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 2008. PAGE 3. Happy anniversary to Scott and Sal Bromley who celebrate Aug. 19. I hear by the grapevine that I missed a very important milestone in July, so happy 50th wedding anniversary to Corrie and Alvin Wallace of Blyth who celebrated on July 9. Visiting at the home of Rev. Kathy Douglas and Rev. Gary Clark on the weekend were friends from St. Thomas, Troy and Crystal Van Ginkel and their family Areal and Daaron. BLYTH UNITED CHURCH Greeting at Blyth United Church on Sunday,Aug. 17 were Fred Meier, Terry Richmond and Joan and Lavern Clark. Lynda McGregor was director of music. Ushering were Brenda Brooks, Nicole Kerr and Terry Richmond. Rev. Gary Clark introduced a friend who played the guitar and sang for the congregation. The call to worship was followed by the choir singing, Draw the Circle Wide and the congregation was asked to join in, the first hymn All Creatures of Our God. The scripture readings were from Luke and Genesis. The next hymn, Lead on O Cloud of Presence, was sung. Rev. Clark asked the children, What special thing they wanted. Things people really want, they must have hope that they will happen, he said. Everyone said a prayer together and the children were given pictures of camping to colour. Rev. Clark’s message to the adults was Danger, Falling Ice. Rev. Clark walked up the street shortly after he arrived in Blyth and read a sign on a building that said, Danger Falling Ice. This doesn’t happen in 25°C weather. Sarah and Abraham thought that having a baby at their age was impossible too. Also many people are told never to sing and many of these people love to sing even though they can’t carry a tune. These people lose their fear of not singing. There are many things people are afraid to do but they must let go of the fear and do them anyway. Jesus prepared His disciples to go out into the world and tell of God’s love. He tells them therewill be splits in many households. Some will choose faith in God and others will not. People can draw the circle wide by being concerned with the global world. The world needs God’s word and it will not be easy, the fear is going to be there. People are often afraid that they are going to have to give up their way of life but this does not have to happen. Have faith in God and He will show the way. Welcome Rev. Gary Clark is the new minister at Blyth United Church. He preached his first sermon Aug. 10. (Bonnie Gropp photo) Blyth United Church congregation has welcomed a new minister. Rev. Gary Clark arrived officially Aug. 1, and led his first service Aug. 10. After graduating from seminary in Prince Edward Island in 1988, Clark settled first in Saskatchewan for six years before moving to Manitoba. He remained there for 13 years, with the exception of one year when he served as intentional interim minister at a church in Stratford. The job of an intentional interim minister, he said, is to “exorcise the ghosts, both good and bad, of previous ministers.” He explains that in the case of a long-term pastoral charge, it can be difficult for a new minister to come in and not be compared to his predecessor. “In that case an intentional interim minister shakes the dust off so they are already used to someone else before the new one comes in.” On the other side of this is when something has gone wrong between a minister and the congregation. The situation in Blyth is neither of these, however, as Blyth had been without a minister for over a year, and Clark was looking for a change. His partner, Kathy Douglas, is the new youth minister for the Huron- Perth Presbytery. “Once we knew she was being settled in this Presbytery, that’s where I began to focus my search. In the United Church when a church is looking for a new minister, they first form a joint needs assessment committee to discover the congregation’s needs. “This is important for the congregation to take seriously so they aren’t searching for the same thing over and over,” said Clark. Then the search committee, with representatives from the Presbytery send out what is essentially an ad in the church circles. If there is interest a call is put out. “In this case I heard they were looking,” said Clark, who is here on an open-ended call. Clark’s focus as a spiritual leader, he said, is insuring that everyone’s gifts shine, not just his. “My understanding is that over the last 18 months this congregation has discovered a lot of their own gifts. I want them to grow in those treasures they’ve already uncovered.” Luann’s Country Flowers & Gifts MOVING SALE BLYTH LOCATION ONLY 409 QUEEN ST. 519-440-0987 CLOSING OCTOBER 2008 Serving Blyth, Londesborough, Clinton, Goderich, Port Albert, Bayfield and points in between.
