The Citizen, 2008-08-14, Page 17On a scale of high, moderate, orlow, Wingham and area healthprofessional recruitment officerDianne Harrison said that their need
is high.
“I would love to be able to bring in
additional support for our current
team, and that is what we are
working towards,” she said.
Currently, Wingham and area is on
the list of more than 142 under
serviced communities in Ontario
that are in hot pursuit of skilled
health care professionals. For physicians, this means thereare a lot of bells and whistles beingthrown toward them from allcorners, but recently the Winghamand District Hospital (WDH)welcomed two site visits from
interested doctors.
On July 28 and 29, Harrison and
the WDH opened its doors to a
British Columbia physician and her
husband who are looking to relocate
to Ontario.
“They had a great visit,” said
Harrison. “In fact, she spent time
observing in our clinic with our
physicians.”The doctor in question is planningto begin her medical residencywithin the next year, and Harrison isfeverishly working on locatingemployment opportunities for herhusband, who works as a research
assistant.
Similarly, Harrison is following up
with area law offices regarding
another spouse.
On Aug. 1, 2 and 3, a physician –
lawyer duo visited the community
and expressed an interest in rural
medicine and family practice.
“She is in her final year of family
residency at the University ofOttawa and looking to set up afamily practice,” Harrison explained.“Her husband is also interested inestablishing a law practice, I’mworking all corners.”While both visits were successful,
Harrison is still working hard to reel
more in.
“Other than remaining in
consistent contact and doing what I
can on this end, the ball is in their
court,” she said. “I have received
letters from both couples that
expressed their thanks and said that
they enjoyed their visits.”
The addition of two morephysicians to the team of six atWDH would be a great help, but isstill three off from their recruitmentgoals.“We are currently seeking fivefamily physicians for the team, and
I’m bringing in as many as I can for
visits,” she said.
Her efforts are paying off, too. In
the past 10 months of her
employment with WDH, Harrison
has hosted five site visits, which “is
five times more than the amount of
visits in previous years.”

Your help is needed more than
ever to ensure children in our
community get the right start at
school.
The United Way of Bruce Grey
has a list of 1,500 children in need of
backpacks and school supplies. The
Huron United Way and United Way
of Perth County are both helping
hundreds more.
Huron United Way executive
director Michelle Gellatly says
“This year is especially difficult.
The numbers are up dramatically
due to changes in govern-
ment assistance for low-income
families.”
For the fourth year in a row, 101.7
The One has held The Giving Back-
Pack Program. Program director
Gina Lorentz says “A new school
year is a fresh start for students,
filled with opportunities to learn,
have fun and grow as a person.
We’re fortunate to live in a caring
and generous community, ready to
help children on the path to a
successful year”.
The One Giving Back-Pack
Campaign is underway and
continues until the end of the month.
Backpacks and other essential
school items can be dropped off at
Zellers or Mark's Work Wearhouse
Stores in Goderich, Hanover, Owen
Sound and Listowel. There are also
collection bins at MicroAge Basics
in Goderich and Wingham.
Gellatly says they welcome good
quality used scientific calculators,
because it’s a bigger ticket item
that’s in high demand.
If you prefer to make a financial
donation, you can do that through
your local United Way. Families in
need can also be in touch with the
agency.
