There were lots of changes in the
scenery in the last two weeks.
The winter wheat crop has been
mostly harvested at this point, no
thanks to our unpredictable weather.
The spring wheat, barley and oats
are looking ready in some places, so
it can stop raining. Those farmers
looking to cut hay are also wanting
the rain to stop for a good stretch of
time. Most fields of straw have been
baled and those that have not, are not
looking so good. There is lots of
straw in the countryside this year.
Fields are being chisel plowed
already and we have even seen some
no-till drills out planting peas into
the stubble for the nutrient value.
With the costs of fertilizers
drastically rising, putting as much
natural resources like manure, straw
and peas into the ground, is being
done more and more.
A little excitement was caused
when a helicopter landed in Walton
on a Thursday at lunch time behind
P & H. What could be happening?
Was it the police searching for
marijuana crops or was it the air
ambulance? As it turned out it was a
crop spraying helicopter which had
landed at P&H for a refill of spray. Itwas spraying a grain crop in thearea. It was, however, a reminder thatfarmers are to be on the lookout forunusual traffic around fields and acrop that might not be theirs. There are always plenty of familyreunions taking place over thesummer.
The Stewart reunion was held at
the home of Jeff and Shannon
McGavin. The Stewarts are Neil
McGavin’s mother’s side of the
family. There were over 50 in
attendance to enjoy wagon rides
through the bush and around the
ponds. Others took the opportunity
to swim or just visit and socialize.
A potluck meal was served during
a great day together with family
from Windsor, Peterborough,
Toronto and the area.
A very special reunion was held at
the farm of Ken and Marina Scott of
Roxboro, as well. It was the 175th
anniversary of the Scotts and Dixons
coming to Canada. This reunion
carried on all weekend with plenty
of relatives and descendants
travelling from afar to attend.
Locally, Rob and Allyson (Scott)
Cardiff and family attended, along
with others from as far as South
Korea, New Zealand, British
Columbia, Ottawa and across
Canada and as well locally. It was a
fun-filled weekend of eating,
camping, kids activities.
Edna Pearson (Ralph) graduated
from nursing school in 1949 from
the Old Victoria Hospital in London.
