The Blyth Barons travelled toBelmore for Huron County Leagueaction Tuesday, July 15. DarrylWheeler handled the pitching duties.In the first Darcey Cook flew outto centrefield. Ryan Clancy drew a
walk but was picked off at first by
the Belmore catcher. Wheeler
singled, Chris Stewart walked and
Mike Bromley struck out to end the
inning.
In their half of the inning Belmore
managed two hits but left the runners
on base with the final two batters
striking out.
In the second the Barons sat down
in order.
In the bottom of the inning, after
recording the first two outs on
ground balls, Wheeler surrendered
two hits but retired the final batter on
a ground-out as well.
Darcey Cook got the only hit for
the Barons in the third.
Then Belmore mastered one hit as
well, but again no runs scored.
Chris Stewart led off the fourth
with a single but was thrown out on
an attempted steal. Cole Stewart
doubled but was stranded.
The first Belmore batter was hit by
a pitch and advanced to second on a
sacrifice bunt. An error by the
Barons’right fielder allowed one run
to score. A ground-out lead brought
in the second run.
The Barons failed to score in the
fifth.
Wheeler then retired the cycle
with two flyouts and a strikeout.
In the sixth Clancy and Wheeler
singled. Chris Stewart advanced the
runners with a sac bunt. Then an
error by the Belmore right fielder on
a Cole Stewart fly bat, allowed asecond run to score.With the game tied 2-2 Wheelerstruck out the side.Pat Cronin drew a walk to start theseventh. Cronin was replaced with a
pinch runner Steve Cook. Justin
Peters struck out followed by a Cook
ground-out that advanced Cook to
second. Cook took the third on a
pass ball and came home on
Clancy’s single to give Blyth the
lead. Singles by Wheeler and Chris
Stewart plus a triple by Mike
McDonald put the Barons up by
three.
Wheeler retired the side in order to
seal Blyth’s 5-2 victory.
This was a great win for the
Barons coming back from a 2-0
deficit.
Blyth took on Belmore again in
Blyth Friday, July 18.
Darcey Cook was on the hill and
sat down the side in order.
Cook led off the Barons’ half with
a triple. He came home on a Mike
McDonald triple to give the Barons a
1-0 lead.
Belmore got the run back in the
second with a single and two Baron
errors.
Pat Cronin led off the second with
a single, but was left on base.
Belmore’s lead-off hitter ripped a
triple off Cook, then came home on
an error by the Baron right field.
The Barons’ answered back,
scoring a run on a single by Wheeler
and the triple by Chris Stewart.
Darcey Cook shut Belmore down.
Then the Barons took the lead. Jeff
Elliott reached first after being hit by
a pitch, then scored on Cook’s
double to centrefield.Belmore took the lead again with adouble, a single and two Baronerrors.Blyth threatened with a double byClancy but nothing would follow
and Belmore held the 4-3 lead.
Belmore had back-to-back singles
but failed to score as Cook retired
the next three.
During their at-bat the Barons had
Wheeler on after he was hit by a
pitch. Chris Stewart singled but no
runs scored.
Belmore broke it open scoring
three runs on three hits and a Baron
error to take the lead to 7-3 in the top
of the seventh.
In the bottom of the inning Chris
Stewart singled for the only Baron
hit.
The Barons played Tuesday night
in Goderich against the Orioles. The
next home game is Friday, July 25 at
7:30 p.m. against the Zurich
Rangers.
Meeting in the middle
The Blyth U-18 girls took on Lucknow Thursday night as
part of a week of soccer for the playoff tournament.

earned a spot in the semi-finals
against Lucknow. This was a very
exciting and closely-matched game.
Lucknow was first to score.
Steele set up a goal for Blyth and
Drost chipped the ball into the net.
Colin Bokhout scored for his team
after a beautiful shot on a corner
kick.
Lucknow tied it up when they
scored on a corner kick.
In the second half, Lucknow
scored on a breakaway.
Austin Sjaarda set up the next goal
and Drost scored his second of the
game.
Lucknow took advantage of a free
kick and scored after a Blyth player
was called for a shove.
In the end Blyth ran out of time
and Lucknow won by a narrow
4-3.
This loss ended the tournament for
Blyth. With such a great effort put on
by the team, it was a disappointing
loss for Blyth, when they were so
close to making it to the tourney
finals.
Coach Rob Kolkman was pleased
with his team’s performance in the
tournament.
Defensive players were: Colin
Bokhout, Alec Lorentz, Jacob and
Micah Nonkes, Ross MacDonald
and Mark Siertsema. Halfbacks were
Brendon Boven, Tolson Carter,
Kurtis Kolkman, Jessie Pot, Jordon
Rinn and Matthew Steele. Forwards
were: Brent Drost, Caleb Haak,
Austin Sjaarda, JanPaul and
Leendert VanDorp.
The Destroyers goalkeeper was
Greg Roetcisoender.
