As the last light of the sun hit the
peak of the Goderich Public Library,
the Last Light Photo Exhibit wound
down for its first day.
More than 70 people came out to
the photo show/contest, including all
three winners for the contest’s three
themes: Kindred Spirits, Nature’s
Vista and Rockin’Out and the grand
prize winner.
The contest, in its second year
now, is held in honour of Lucknow
resident and former Goderich
Signal-Star reporter Sarah Mann,
who passed away in July of 2006.
Sarah’s mother, Lynne Mann, said
the themes were chosen because
they were all close to her daughter’s
heart.
“I went through Sarah’s pictures
one day and in any given roll a large
portion would have been local
bands, a large portion would have
been of her little friend, Mitchell,
and a large part would be sunsets,”
she said.
Lynne said she is pleased with the
turnout for the event, and the
additional catgories brought in some
different shots.
“Last year it was all sunsets,” she
said. “There were still sunset shots
(this year), but we had animals, there
were landscapes and some
interesting rocking out ones as well.
“We had some pretty good kindred
spirits, too.”
Organizer Jenna Ujiye said nearly
100 photos were submitted for the
contest, ranging in both skill level
and subject matter.
While sunsets and nature do lend
themselves to colour, Lynne said she
was impressed with the black and
white photography.
“A lot of people don’t like to see
the black and whites but I do,” she
said.
Lynne added she would have liked
to have seen more Rockin’ Out
photos, but understands it may be a
demographic thing.“The age of people taking thosepictures might not be the age to entera photo contest, but there were stillenough to make it interesting,” shesaid. “We were really pleased withthe way it turned out.”
Photo enthusiasts can come check
out the Last Light exhibit on the
upper floor of the Goderich Public
Library during the next two weeks,
and cast their vote for the viewers’
choice.
If you see anything you like, you
can also perhaps eventually go home
with it.
“All photos are up for sale,” said
Ujiye. “Upstairs in the library people
can vote for viewers choice and bid
on any of the photos on display and
in the photo book.”
All the money raised from the
sales goes to Community Living
Central Huron.
“(Community Living) was one of
the things that was very near and
dear to Sarah’s heart,” said Lynne.
While she said there will be
something new next year, Lynne
stopped shy of revealing just what
that would be.
Winners of the viewers’ choice
will be revealed in two weeks, after
voting is finished.
Ujiye said the Huron Camera Club
gives big thanks to the GoderichSignal-Star for the grand prize, aswell as Elizabeth’s Art Gallery,Carman Camera, Volvo, HuronTourism Association and LighthouseMoney Management for additionalprizes.
