The Citizen, 2008-05-08, Page 33THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2008. PAGE 33.Two of Edmonton’s emergingsongwriters - Nathan Carroll andBrock Tyler - are performing songsfrom their acclaimed records atCinnamon Jim’s Upper Deck in Brussels, Saturday, May 10, 8 p.m. Tyler and Carroll’s folk/roots stylings are rich with lyrical prowess, gripping harmonies and sensitive, skillful instrumentation (seasoned with guitars, banjo and pedal steel). Carroll’s debut record, The Tie-In to Dyin’, was released in early 2007 to rave reviews and sold-out shows. There are a variety of song styles and timbres on album, with music and lyrics for 11 of the songs written by Carroll and arranged by himself and producer Tyler. Before I’m Gone is written as a tribute to Carroll’s grandfather who is entering the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. Pallbearers Song is a witty look at Carroll’s own funeral day and the people who will “walk that final mile” with him. Along with these original pieces are two revitalized songs: a rendition of Tom Paxton’s, The Last Thing on my Mind and Laser Beam by Low. Tyler is a multi-instrumentalist songwriter with Winnipeg roots currently residing in Edmonton. His debut album, Unclosing, was released in July 2007 Eden Munroe, of Vue Weekly, highlights his song, Sparkle Street as a fine example of the thoughtfulness that marks this album, “taking what could pass in mere moments of real time - walking along a sidewalk, getting in a car and heading home - and elongating it to the point that itfeels like slow motion. The songitself doesn’t drag, though, shimmering as it sets the scene withlittle urge to hurry along.” Coffee House tickets are available at Cinnamon Jim’s Café. While the weather was overcast, the rain stayed away for much of the morning until the skies opened up in the afternoon, giving people a good four hours of shopping time.
