Phyllis Mitchell is a woman who
enjoys being outdoors.
However, while she loved to
garden, life on the farm kept her far
to obusy to pursue this pastime as
much as she would have liked. She
also had always had a desire to
incorporate some kind of water
feature on her property, but the idea,
she laughs, was never greeted with
the same enthusiasm by her
husband. “He wasn’t interested.”
Well, with a form of retirement,
and a move to town, plenty has
changed. While Mitchell still lends
a hand at the farm she now has a
little spare time to dedicate to
perennial gardens, which have been
enhanced by a pondless waterfall
and a “bubbling stone.”
The first fall they moved to
Brussels, Mitchell had the water
features created. She contacted a
local nursery that does a lot of pond
work and after consultations the
place was chosen.
The waterfall is situated at the
edge of the corner lot near the
outside deck, thus creating a focal
point for Mitchell’s bed and
breakfast guests to appreciate on
quiet summer evenings, as well as
for local evening strollers.
The waterfall begins a cascade
down several levels in varying
directions and ends in a small pool
at the bottom.
Mitchell said she had always
wanted some kind of water feature
at the front door so the bubbling
stone was dug into the front bed.
“The birds come to the stone. It’s
nice.”
The stone is a small feature, much
like the small decorative fountains
that can be picked up at various
stores. However, the stone is more
like a pond in that it has been dug
into its position, with a liner placed
beneath and a pump below the
surface.
