Gary Caldwell of Blyth was presented his $4,000 cheque from the Wingham Knights of
Columbus last week for winning first prize in their elimination draw. Caldwell promptly traded
the cheque in for the alternative, a $5,000 voucher available for use at one of the draw’s over
50 vendors. From left: Draw chairman, Jim Steffler, Caldwell, Bill Hallahan of the Knights of

Enforcement efforts to catch
speeders in specific areas of the
county are not over, according to
Huron OPP.
“They will continue on an on-
going basis as the need arises,” said
Const. Joanna Van Mierlo.
In March, the Huron OPP traffic
unit in conjunction with Huron
County identified various locations
of concern regarding speeding
motorists, including Auburn and
Blyth.
The posted speed in Auburn is 50
kilometres an hour. Police
conducted a study of vehicle speeds
using hand-held directional radar
and found the average speed to be 65
kph.
The next month, in April, police
focused traffic enforcement efforts
on this area and issued
approximately 40 provincial offence
notices.
Police returned approximately a
month later to conduct the study
once again. The average speed was
then determined to be 53 kph.
Enforcement was conducted on
Queen Street in Blyth during the
month of April, with some drivers
being charged for speeding.
A study of the average speed was
conducted and it was found to be 54
kph for northbound and 51 kph for
southbound traffic.
The third stop was through
Hensall on London Road. There the
study determined an average speed
of 75 kph in a posted 60 kph zone.
Over the month of April, police
focused on this area and issued
approximately 60 tickets. Returning
to conduct a similar study, the
average speed was 64 kph.
“For all of you who choose to
speed, consider yourself pre-
warned. We may be set up around
the next bend in your road and if you
come speeding into our radar beam,
you could be charged,” said Van
Mierlo. “Slow down for your own
sake and for the sake of others
sharing the road.”
