The Citizen, 2008-05-01, Page 9THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2008. PAGE 9. UCW gets some tips on foot careThe average person walks morethan 100,000 miles in a lifetime. Is itany wonder that in time our feetbegin to complain?Bev Riley, who gained experiencecaring for patients’ feet when she
worked in the Clinton hospital, now
does private foot care. She attended
the UCW meeting at Londesborough
United Church on Monday evening,
April 21 to talk to the women
gathered there about how feet
change over time.
Essentially, feet become more
fragile with age. Skin loses
elasticity, nails may become brittle
and infected, nerves are easilydamaged, joints lose flexibility andsupporting tissues can weaken andtear. All these things cause pain anddiscomfort. Poor circulation, diabetes, neuropathy and arthritis
can also cause foot problems.
Bev talked about how time and
poor fitting footwear changes the
shape of one’s feet and just how
important it is to begin a program of
care.
A footcare program, including
foot baths, moisturizing creams,
restorative sprays and proper shoes
and socks will bring better health to
feet and less discomfort. Tips onwashing and drying feet andtrimming toenails were given.Bev noted that a sensible walkingprogram is the best remedy formaking feet and the rest of the body
healthy. She demonstrated a number
of simple exercises that would
improve the overall condition of
anyone’s feet.
Everyone there that night went
home with at least one or two tips on
how to ease the pain and burning in
their feet that is a result of long days
and aging.
Betty Millar, Helen Dale and Joan
Whyte led a short time of devotion.
Notice was given regarding the
campsite Experience at Camp
Bimini on June 9 and the summer
event at Siloam United Church inLondon on July 19. Discussion washeld regarding a theatre outing andconducting the Sunday morningservice on conference Sunday, May25 during the business part of the
evening.

This week, April 27 to May 3, is
designated Volunteer Appreciation
Week.
The message delivered at
Londesborough United Church
spoke of how God’s presence would
always be there to help those persons
who serve God by serving others.
Lions International is a service club
and the Londesborough Lions Club
does just that, serve others for the
betterment of our community.
At the end of the morning service
Lion Al Bosman spoke about the
Lions’ Helen Keller Award. Helen
Keller became both deaf and blind,
yet she lived a life full of service to
others.
She became an inspiration to
others through the years. Lions
use this award to give recognition
to those in their community
who selflessly serve others;
who volunteer with no thought for
return.
Lion Keith Allen gave lengthy
report on Jack and Helen Lee’s
selfless serving of their community
over the 60 years of their marriage
and life in the community.
He spoke of the joy and support
the couple continue to offer to
others. On behalf of the
Londesborough Lions Club, whose
members were there to thank the
couple, Don Allen presented Jack
and Helen with a Helen Keller
Award.
On hand for the presentation that
morning at Londesborough United
were Jack and Helen’s children, a
number of grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.
Congratulations from all in the
community, Jack and Helen. They
are most deserving recipients of this
auspicious award.
