The Citizen, 2008-05-01, Page 7The population of Walton exploded
on the weekend at least 10 fold with
two events being held in the village.
The smaller of the two events was the
Huron County 4-H Chinchilla Club
show and auction at the Walton Hall.
The show was at 10 a.m. and the
auction at 11 a.m. and the event was
well attended.
The second event was the grand
opening and customer appreciation
day held at the new McGavin
compact equipment building. There
were tours of the new facility from 9
a.m. until 4 p.m. with a great crowd
milling around throughout the day.
The 101.7 The One crew did a
fantastic job broadcasting to draw
everyone to the village of Walton and
McGavin’s.
During the ceremonies, Neil and
Marie McGavin cut the ribbon to
officially open the doors.
Representing Morris-Turnberry was
councillor Lynn Hoy who brought
greetings and presented a plaque to
McGavin’s. The food and
refreshments included hot dogs,
hamburgers and sausage and
sauerkraut on a bun were expertly
cooked by Gord Pryce and Irma,
Steve Dennis and Judy and Lorne
Glanville.
Donations for the food went to the
Huron County 4-H. Also proceeds
from the sale of Michael Peterson’s
CDs went to 4-H as well. It was a
great day with lots of people taking
time to visit and catch up with old
and new friends.
There are two new baby girls to tell
you about. The first bundle of joy
arrived last weekend to proud parents
Mandy Workman and Wes Wilson.
The wee Hailey is a little sister to
Gavin and he’s excited.
The second bundle is a second
daughter for Michael and Rachel
Bernard. Little Casey Lynne has
arrived to the delight of big sister
Madison. Grandparents Carmen and
Mary Bernard and great-grandpa
Gerald Watson are thrilled to have
another girl to spoil.
Get-well wishes go to Jason
Thompson who has suffered a broken
ankle. He will be laid up for at least a
month as it is a bad break.
Fast healing wishes also go out to
Abby McGavin who suffered a
mishap on the trampoline and has
suffered a broken leg.
Feeling better since his mishap is
Les Glanville. He suffered somebroken ribs after he fell from a ladderand is still a little sore. These accidents could be blamedon spring. Spring cleaning for one, spring enthusiasm for another andgreat warm spring weather foranother.Returning from a trip to Sudburyare Neil and Ruth Schade. Theydrove up to visit with some old
friends and relatives. Could say
another sign of spring.
Last year in early May, some folks
around Walton suggested that
everyone get out and clean up the
roadside ditches. This not only makes
our area look a lot better but is
environmentally friendly. I had every
intention of getting out there to get
our property done this coming
weekend (when I was free) but a nice
gentlemen already has the highway
done for me. On Saturday morning he
was out picking up all the garbage
from the ditch.
I didn’t get out to get his name but
he did a very long stretch of road
between Walton and Brussels. If your
property isn’t done, try and find some
time to make our highways and
townships look better.
Taking off for the weekend was
Chris Lee. He was joining a group of
old friends for a reunion of sorts.
Years ago, a group of men with their
sons would head off for a weekend of
camping and fun. Now the sons are
older with young families of their
own, and the men headed off to relive
the fun times.
The group of eight headed forWashago, north of Orillia, at the tipof Lake Couchiching. There theywent trail biking for hours, throughthe swamps and around beaver dams. They had perfect weather forcanoeing as well. Some of the men joining in thisexcursion were Murray Bremner andJustin, Barry Bremner, KeithGalbraith and Brett plus a couple
more friends. Sounds like they had a
great time.
Having family in for the day
following church on Sunday were
Robert and Jackie Glanville. Helping
to celebrate the confirmation of
Edward and Melissa were
grandparents Lorne and Bonnie
Glanville, Dave and Janet
McCutcheon, Karen, Evan and
Kelsey Smith, and Andrew, Darlene,
Avery and Brett McCutcheon.
The home of Brian and Shelley was
filled with family and friends joining
in the celebration of Abby’s
confirmation. Along with
Grandparents Neil and Marie
McGavin and Laird and Ruby
Finlayson, Sharon and Brad
Carnochan, Sandra, Doug and
Jackson Dietz, SueAnn, Ed and Nikki
Van Miltenburg, Cathy, Pat, and
Shayna Melady and Jeanette
Connolly shared the afternoon
together.
Steve and Teresa Baan opened their
home for family members to share in
Allison’s special day of confirmation.
John and Mary Baan, Richard and
Heather, Jordan, Jamie Gerber, along
with Bruce and Shirley Wilson, andBryce and Laurie, Brayden, andKaitlin Wilson enjoyed a wonderfulafternoon together. The Ringgenberg family travelledto Benmiller for a family dinner tocelebrate William’s confirmation.Joining them were Nadine and EloiseRinggenberg, sisters of William, whowere home from Guelph University. They were also celebrating Nadine’s
graduation with her Bachelor of
Science in animal biology and that
she will soon be leaving for New
Zealand to work on a dairy farm for
six months. Congratulations to her.
Ryan Baan also made the choice to
eat out to celebrate his confirmation.
Joining in the celebration were
grandparents John and Julia
VanOstaayan. It was a surprise
destination in Crabby Joe’s.
THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2008. PAGE 7.
Members and friends of Duff’s
United Church were welcomed by
Chad and Crystal McCallum with
baby Kaleigh to Sunday’s service.
This was a special Sunday as it was
confirmation. Rev. Sandra Yule
extended a welcome to the friends
and families in attendance. There
were eight young people to join the
church.
Ryan Baan read the minute for
mission that conveyed the message
that when helping people, you must
listen because each person knows
best what they need. Sometimes
traditional wisdom is the wisest
wisdom.
The confirmands and their parents
then participated in the act of
confirmation. Welcomed into the
congregation of Duff’s United
Church and the community of God
were Allison Baan, daughter of
Steve and Teresa Baan; Ryan Baan,
son of Don and Monique Baan;
Melissa and Edward Glanville
children of Robert and Jackie
Glanville; Abby McGavin, daughter
of Brian and Shelley McGavin;
William Ringgenberg, son of
Albrecht and Annalies Ringgenberg;
Michele and Ursina Studhalter,
daughters of Josef and Susanne
Studhalter. The confirmands then
served communion to the
congregation. Rather than reflection,
Rev. Sandra spoke on what a joy it
had been working with the
wonderful group of young people. It
is truly a blessing for this
community to have so many join the
church, she said.
The offering was collected by
Brian Wilbee and Graeme Craig.
Following the service, everyone was
invited downstairs to enjoy cake and
ice-cream to celebrate the day.
The United Church Women did
inventory at the church this week.
They also discussed the turkey
supper and the fish fry this weekend.
The Sunday school is looking for
Sunday school teachers for the fall.
Anyone interested can contact Rev.
Sandra or Monique Baan.
Stopping by
Ethan Slater, four, right, and Norah Slater, who is almost
two, took a breather while attending the recent open house
at McGavin’s in Walton. The event raised $780 for Huron
County 4-H Clubs. (Vicky Bremner photo)
