The Citizen, 2008-05-01, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2008.
We’re in the middle of Volunteer
Week. This is the time to be sure that
you thank the many people in your
life’s circle who add the sugar to life.
Volunteers come in many ages, sizes
and interests and each one is truly
appreciated by the folks who benefit
from their generosity.
If you took the volunteers out of
community, our lives would be
thoroughly affected. Churches,
community centres and halls, sports
teams, care facilities, hospice and
schools would find a large vacuum
in the effort to provide service.
Charitable organizations would
cease to exist if the volunteers stayed
at home. No more St. John
Ambulance or Lodges or Legion, no
more drivers for Town and Country
or the Cancer Society. Gone would
be the canvassers for the many
diseases that need support – arthritis,
heart, kidney, MS to name but a few.
Oh yes we really do need the
volunteers.
So thank you for the hours you so
freely give. Our lives are so much
better because you care and we are
thankful.
Marguerite Thomas has stories to
tell about her recent trip to Nunavut.
Peter Workman provided bed and
breakfast to Marguerite and her
friend Joan for their unscheduled
stopover. Pangnirtung was their
target but the winds of the north put
that part of the trip on hold. So host
Peter of the north gave them the tour
of the capital, Iqaluit and a place to
sleep before they caught the plane to
see Joan’s daughter.
It’s good to have friends in many
places. The differences in culture, a
community feast with all their
traditional foods and touring their
school that educates up to Grade 12
(where Joan’s daughter is the
principal) as well as the awesomelandscapes were highlights of thetrip for Marguerite. The Thomas family had a greattime lately making sure Charlieremembered that he had hit 80. SonsBob and Dave took him for a planeride and Dianne’s boys Neil and Matt who are at college in Waterloorepresented Mom in Red Lake at thefestivities. Lots of friends enjoyedgood food and fun.Jane Draper made a spiffy cake forcelebrations at JR’s as well.So have a good year Charlie, it’soff to a great start. The spring is here so that meansthere are lots of eat events to attend.Ethel United Church has a supperthis Sunday and the film and booknight is at Cinnamon Jim’s onSaturday so get your tickets quickand enjoy.Bye Now, Betty G.W.

A baby forest
After winning the litterless lunch contest on Earth Day at Brussels Public School, Anna
Vassiliou’s Grade 1 class was presented with a small, baby tree for each student by Karen
Gilbert’s Grade 5 class. The contest was one of many events going on at the school last
Tuesday, including in-class environmentally-themed activities and each class taking its shift
cleaning the school yard. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
