THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 2008.Members of the Seaforth andDistrict All Girls Marching Bandrecently returned from aperformance/humanitarian tour inDominican Republic.Members raised funds to purchase school supplies, a few uniforms and 70 recorders for the children of Cabeza de Toro, an extremely poor village on the doorstep of a luxury resort. Through the generosity of thecommunity, the band was able totake extra school supplies, shoes, hygiene items, used recorders andmoney for uniforms to the school. The resort loaned them a truck to transport all the gifts to the school. As the truck wound its way through the streets, the band marched behind, accompanied by a translator sent by the resort.Members were appalled by theliving conditions in the village. Straydogs and chickens rooted throughthe garbage that littered the groundand the smell of raw sewage was nearly overpowering at times. Small children played in the dirt outside tumbledown shacks. “I knew it would be hard walking to the school, seeing the kids and theway they lived, but I didn’t think thetrip wold have such an impact on mylife. I didn’t think that just rightoutside the doors of the resort wewould walk into a completely different world,” said Sabrina, 15. The little school sits behind a high fence topped with razor wire. When the gate was unlocked, the truck backed into the schoolyard to ensurethat the gifts would make it into theschool. After their performance, bandmembers gave out gifts of candy, toothbrushes, toothpaste, pencils and Canadian pins. “I thought that all of the kids were so happy but they hardly had Girls band takes humanitarian tour of Dominican Ten Pas Decor • Carpets • Vinyls • Draperies • • Wallcoverings • Paints and Accessories • • Hardwood & Laminates • “Guaranteed Professional Installation” 122 Main Street East, Listowel, Ont. The front door, tucked under a covered porch to one side of the house, is embellished with mullioned side lights. To the left of the compact foyer is a den, featuring french doors that open onto a covered porch bordered by a painted railing that adds elegance to the facade. Just beyond the den, a coat cupboard and powder room are situated for easy use by both family and visitors. Ahead, past an L-shaped flight of stairs on the right, is the spacious great room, where a gas fireplace will warm this room as well as the open-plan dining room and kitchen. Natural light will flood into both the dining room and the great room through large windows. Near the windows, a narrow part of both rooms is open to the floor above. These rooms also enjoy access to a terrace overlooking the back garden, an ideal spot for summer-time meals and relaxation. The kitchen is separated from the other two rooms by an angled counter that conceals the dishwasher. Awindow over the sink will provide a garden view for the cook, and a large pantry guarantees always-welcome storage space. The laundry room, situated a few short steps from the kitchen, has access to the double garage, easing the task of carrying the groceries from the car. A coat cupboard is nearby. Upstairs, the master bedroom is situated at the back of the home for privacy. A large walk-in closet will provide enough space for even the most clothes-conscious couple. The corner windows will let light into the ensuite, which includes a soaker tub and a shower stall. The second, third and fourth bedrooms each contain one special feature — a built-in desk in one, a window seat in another and a walk- in closet in yet another. These bedrooms share a three-piece bathroom. A linen closet is conveniently placed nearby. Exterior finishes include shingled gables, horizontal siding, pilasters with brick bases, painted trim and decorative woodwork. Second- storey windows are partly mullioned.
