To look at this from an Ontario perspective, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture has set up a working group to ensure that the interests of Ontario producers are addressed during this process. This working group is gathering input from commodity organizations for a truthful labeling system that enables real informed choice. The intention of providing choice is to capitalize on our excellent reputation for high quality and safe food products. This has to be the pay-back for the added costs of our strict Canadian regulations Accurate and truthful product labeling, while critical for consumer safety and protection, has a lot of issues to sort through. The Prime Minister’s hands-on approach to consumer health and safety is perfectly timed for the agriculture sector. We can now count on him to ensure that the government departments responsible, including Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, will fully co-operate with the farm sector to bring a new, truthful labeling system to Canada to help sell safe, Canadian food to Canadians.
