The Citizen Classified advertisements published in The Citizen are now available on our website at www.northhuron.on.ca By Sophie Jefferson The fifth meeting of Wawanosh 4- Hs Diverse Dolls was held in the home of Mary Ellen Foran on March 24. The club started a new section in the manual, all about French Canada, which is more than just Quebec. In fact, there are three different kinds of French Canadians: Acadians, who reside mainly in New Brunswick, Franco-Ontarians, from the Ottawa Valley, Northern Ontario, Midland, Welland and Belle River, and the Quebecois, who are descended from the French Habitants. For roll call, the members spoke to each other in French. They then discussed whether or not they thought it was important for Canadians to be able to speak both official languages. They found it unfair that one third of French Canadians speak English, while only nine per cent of English Canadians speak French. The Diverse Dolls also learned about the life of the Habitants. Because their lives were full of hard work, they had many celebrations to make their lives more joyful. One of these festivals was the La Sainte- Catherine which was started when Marguerite Bourgeoys, a sister of Notre Dame, gave her students a special treat of taffy on the feast day. She also allowed them to eat candy and fruit all day in class. The members got a taste of the taffy pull that the students would have had by making it from the recipe in the book. They thought it was delicious. Mary Ellen spoke about the Seigneural System in New France. The land was supervised by the intendant, who gave large parcels to seigneuries. The Habitants were each given a very small, narrow section of this land in exchange for goods, money and labour that they paid their seigneur. Marita Oudshoorn showed the members some pictures of what the Habitant’s farms looked like, as well as a typical seigneural fort. Lorraine McIlhargey then told the members about Madeleine de Vercheres, the 14-year-old daughter of a seigneur. While her parents were away, the seigneury was attacked by the Iroquois. With her two younger brothers, an old man and a neighbour, Madeline held off the attackers for 16 days until help arrived. The members all agreed on how smart and resourceful she was. Following this, the members went downstairs with Sophie Jefferson to play a game about the fur traders, aka the voyageurs or coureurs des bois. The members learned about how the French traders got more furs using the large canoes and going to the Native Canadians instead of making the Natives come to them as the English did by having a relay. Ellen Jefferson also told the members about the voyagers. Many voyagers wore a Ceinture Flechee, which is a belt that is usually woven on a loom. Ellen had begun to make a simpler one, using the instructions in the book. Before Reba Jefferson closed the meeting with the pledge, all the members tried it and looked at the one that Jolande Oudshoorn had also started. 4-H learnsabout French Canadians
