The Citizen, 2008-02-21, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2008. The snow doesn’t seem to be out of the system yet. With every downfall comes more stories of disasters and good deeds. Experiences from the winter of 2008 will join the other past winters of significance. Depth of snowdrifts, speed of wind, missed school days, the chill factor temperature and names and places of extended hospitality will be part of our stories as the years go on. So smile and enjoy. You’re making history and you’ll have great stories to tell as part of your history. Winterlude in Ottawa is in full swing. Celebrating winter is the soul purpose of this event. In its 34th year, Winterlude offers the world’s largest skating rink on the Rideau Canal with skate rentals, cute red sleighs for those not comfortable skating or to push brand new babes and moms or grandpas. Beaver tails, a Winterlude must and hot drinks are available on the skateway to replenish the energy. As the years ago by, the getting on of the skates is the main event. Anyway Ralph and I had two great days in Ottawa being perfect tourists, which means doing the things the promotion book suggests and loving every minute. Ice and snow sculpturing is one of the many things to see in downtown Ottawa. The skill level of the artists is unimaginable, horses with riders, people in various positions and dress, dragons and warriors, igloos and inukshuk and a Harley. Reading the Ottawa paper I find that 18,000 blocks of ice came from Hensall this year to be turned into Winterlude signs for the participating businesses as well as the many ice sculptures for us to admire. Celebrating winter is great! Hallyville beckoned so we had two sleepovers with Beth and brother Jim doing the catch up offamily. Their oldest Patrick is inAlberta, not that far from my Phil, and daughter Nicole is thoroughlyenjoying the student life in ThunderBay.Son Wade’s project for Grade 10history was to dig and buildtrenches, as used in the war. For anyof you who knew my dad, George Hetherington, the genes are showing up in Wade. He loves history and nature, so dug right in to this project. Folks from the War Museum hear about the students’efforts and found their work very impressive and very real. Pictures in the Winchester paper showed their real grasp of the lives of our soldiers. I hope you had a good Valentine’s Day. In my life that day just gets better and better. Bye now, Betty G.W. NEWS FROM BRUSSELS By BettyGraberWatsonCall 887-6236887-9231A NOTE FROM BETTY By Jo-Ann McDonald The week at the Brussels Legion Branch began with a nasty Tuesday evening for the Cadets to meet. They had a shortened meeting because of the stormy weather. Wednesday was the day for the Huron County Dairy Producers annual meeting. They had a couple of guest speakers following their roast beef dinner provided by the Branch. Nearly 60 people were present. Helping for the Branch were Deb Cann, Judy Lee, Jo-Ann McDonald, Cecil Moore, Ross and Marg Bennett and Charlie and Grace Procter. The Thursday night darts and 11 players take aim at the boards. The first-place team was Catrina Josling, Roger McHardy and Tim Harrison. Coming in second were Harry Smith, Marlene Little and John Harrison. The high shot of the evening was by Tim shooting 140. Players are always welcome on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. The Friday night supper was a sellout with over 40 people enjoying the roast beef dinner. This week is beef stew. There were lots of happy folks on Saturday evening for wings, meat draws and karaoke. Wings and fries were served during the evening and a dozen meat draws made 36 happy winners. Some played darts and other groups chatted and enjoyed the music. There were plenty of singers to entertain and in some cases amuse. Celebrating Valentine’s Day, there were plenty of chocolates for some lucky people. Branch helpers for the evening were Rick McDonald, Jim and Christopher Brown, Lisa Glanville and Anne Pelletier. Thanks to Mike and Michelle Dauphin for the karaoke machine. St. Patrick’s would seem like the next best time to celebrate with another pub night. The Legion year is almost three- quarters of the way over, so it is time to be looking ahead to elections in April. There are openings for help on the many various committees.
