The Citizen, 2008-01-03, Page 8By Rev. Dave WoodHuron Chapel EvangelicalMissionary ChurchThe Christmas story is anabsolutely amazing love story for it is God, the Creator and Sustainer of all that is, sending His Son, Jesus Christ on a rescue mission to earth. “For God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) This is the heart of the Christmas story and though some would attempt to take the Christ out of Christmas, it is way too late. He came, this wondrous Son of God and He was born of the Virgin just as the Father determined and He walked among us and history records His passing. Grasp if you can the implicationsof what had transpired in a mangerin a little town called Bethlehem.God incarnate, the Creator of all thatis, became flesh and blood and walked among us. It is beyond mere human thought and only God could have thought of Christmas. And friends, this gift of the Son comes directly from the heart of God. For Jesus came on a mission and by human terms this mission was impossible but for Jesus. It was His goal, His passion, His plan. Even though it led Him to that place called Calvary, even though it cost Him His very life blood and great pain . . . the mission was accomplished and hope was reborn. No wonder the angels could come as the heralds of Almighty God with the message, “Do not be afraid. I bring news of great joy that will befor all the people.”Joy had entered time and space;the rescue mission had begun. We are living in perilous times. It seems everywhere you look there is evidence of uncertainty and fear. Hope for many has become a byword in this society. The words of the angel continue to ring true for 2008 and will stand true throughout eternity. Hope has come and the Rescuer is present for Jesus is no helpless infant but is the radiant Son of God Who loves us and through His sacrifice offers to us the greatest gift, the gift of eternal life. This is Christmas. This is still the reason for the season; a cause to celebrate for hope has been wrapped up in love and Jesus continues to offer it to all who would come. This season, open your heart toJesus and experience in Him the words of angels, “news of greatjoy!” Merry Christmas, Happy NewYear and God bless us everyone! PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 3, 2008. Keeping with their farmer-friendly tradition, Huron East voted in favour to defer farmers’ property taxes for the fourth year in a row at their Dec. 18 meeting. The farmland taxation, as it has been for the last three years, will be deferred until the September-November taxation installments. As in previous years, Huron East can expect to lose some money in lost investments. Last year this totalled $30,000, as a result of deferring nearly $1 million in taxes. While this is a move that has earned Huron East many fans in the past, deputy-mayor Bernie MacLellan questioned it, saying that the move was implemented when farmers were really on the ropes in 2005 and that things have bettered since then. According to the recommendation from treasurer Brad Knight, prices for wheat were just under $3 per bushel in 2005 and these prices have now risen to just under $6.50 per bushel in 2007. However, hog and cattle farmers are now the ones feeling the pinch, with one of their worst years to date in 2007. The deferral applies to 1,700 of Huron East’s 7,700 properties.
