By Jo-Ann McDonald
Brussels Legion members hope
everyone had a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year.
The Branch held its annual
Christmas potluck and gift
exchange on the Friday before
Christmas. There was a wonderful
array of delicious dishes to enjoy.
There were 16 taking part in the gift
exchange and the gifts ranged from
absolutely beautiful, to the very
useful, to the hilariously unuseful.
All went home with a gift and a
Merry Christmas.
The Brussels Army Cadet Corps
held its annual Christmas dinner for
the members and their families on
Tuesday, Dec. 16. There were over
120 present to enjoy the delicious
roast pork dinner provided and
prepared by the Corps Parent
Support Committee. Presentations
were made by the Officers to
Cadets and supporters. Legion
President Jo-Ann McDonald
accepted a certificate of
appreciation from the Corps for the
Branch.
The family of Fran Bremner held
their family Christmas at the
Branch on Christmas Day. A
potluck meal and the usual
Christmas activities carried on with
the family members and a great
time was had by everyone.
Dues are due and Zone euchre is
Jan. 19.
The final euchre card party for
2007 was held on Saturday with
nine tables of players.
The first-place team was Ila and
Carman Pollock with 72 points. In
second place were Glenn Sellers
and Ed Stewart tied with Doreen
Skinner and Isabel Annis with 71
points. The low team prize of the
day with 37 points was Harry Smith
and Anna Elliott. Lucky lone-hand
prizes went to Joann MacDonald
and Charlie Johnston.
The Thursday night darts before
Christmas had 12 players. The first-
place team was Sharon Robbins
and Gord Jacklin. The second-place
team was John Harrison and
Heather LIttle. High shot of the
night was by Devon Josling with a
125.
On the Thursday night of the
holiday darting there were 11
darters out to play. The first-place
team was Norm Dobson, Heather
Little and Gord Jacklin. The
second-place team was Roger
McHardy, Sharon Robbins and
Catrina Josling.
The high shot of the night was by
Sandra Josling with a 101. The
fourth skunk of the year was earned
by team Roger, Sharon and Catrina.
The Friday night suppers will
resume this week with salisbury
steak on the menu.
Welcome 2008. May your hopes
and dreams of Christmas come to
pass as this new year unfolds.
The high spirits of the holidays
are gradually fading as we run out
of steam and interest for more food,
more fun and more frivolity.
Christmas is a season unto its own
and all the joy, hope, peace and love
that we possess is shared in the days
around Dec. 25. Songs of the season
put our feelings out for all to view
and we willingly share with those
around us.
Family and friends found suitable
dates to gather to celebrate this
special time. Eons ago someone
picked Dec. 25 as Christmas and
being sensible we know that
Christmas is in our heart and can
be celebrated when and as we see
fit.
Old traditions are good but new
ones bring life and health to any
gathering that involves those we
love.
Ah ha, just like that first
Christmas celebrated over 2,000
years ago. In the past two weeks
there were lots of visitors in the
village bringing much joy with
them to the celebrations. (Good to
see you Bump and
Peter).
This season is about family and
our loss of family was pretty
profound when Ella Graber died on
Dec. 26. Ella showed those around
her the importance of food and
hospitality and was generous in
sharing the tips of making the most
of food.
Grandpa Carl died in 1976 and
her learning curve to independence
was a miracle to watch. My boys
still remember with a smile her
driving lessons and purchasing her
first of several cars.
Ella was 85 and to her last week
showed the spunk that gave older
women the endearing title of crone.
Carl and Ken and their families
have lots of great memories and
stories to share life as life without
Ella hits the heart.
Realities of January are upon us,
time to take a look at what we did
with the last year and make serious
plans to do a better job with this
new one before us.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Facing off
There was exciting hockey action in Brussels on Saturday
when neighbouring rivals from Blyth skated into town. The
two Atom Local League squads faced off at noon with the
visitors taking home a 5-0 shutout of their hosts (Vicky Bremner

TO ALL RESIDENTS OF THE
MUNICIPALITY OF HURON EAST
PLEASE HELP KEEP THIS
WINTER A SAFE ONE
The Council of the Municipality of Huron East requests the cooperation of the
ratepayers regarding the parking of cars and other vehicles, and the depositing of snow on
municipal roads during the period in which snow clearing operations are necessary.
It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act, section 170(12) to : “Park or stand a
vehicle on a highway in such a manner as to interfere with the movement of traffic or the clear-
ing of snow from the highway.”
Also, Section 181 states: “No person shall deposit snow or ice on a roadway with-
out permission in writing to do so from the Ministry or the Road Authority responsible for the
Maintenance of the Road.”
Parking is not permitted on any street or road within the Municipality of Huron
East between the hours of 2am and 6am from November 1 to April 15. Violators will be ticketed
and may have their vehicles towed and impounded.
Neither the Municipality of Huron East nor the “Snow Plow Operators” will be
held responsible for damage done to vehicles or mailboxes on the Municipal Road Allowance.
YOUR HELP AND COOPERATION IN THESE MATTERS IS GREATLY APPRECIATED
AND WILL AID IN A SAFE WINTER FOR ALL.
