We get regular correspond
ence from Ontario Liberal
leader Robert F. Nixon ■ who
keeps us posted on happenings
at Queen’s Parlt, In his most
recent letter, Mr. Nixon points
out it’s interesting to examine
the ‘factors which have been
weighing on Premier John
Robarts’ mind in ' deciding
whether to ’ have the election
this spring or in the fall.
“Certainly' he’s heard the
complaints of municipal home
owners at receiving their 1967
tax bills,” says. Mr. Nixon.
“Mill rate increases, primarily
due to increases in the coslts of
education, have been reported
this year' in most • of the pro
vince’s municipalities and home-'
owners, already bearing a
heavy tax load, have -been
painting the finger at the pro
vincial government for failing
to take a greater share of these
costs.” • • '
One more ‘reason to rule out
a spring election,, notes Mr.
Nixon, is the Attorney General’s
dismissal* of Metropolitan Tor
onto's chief coroner, Dr. ^Morton
Shulman. Dr. Shulmiart is papu
lar with Toronto people, says*
Mr. Nixon, ‘-‘where some thirty
electoral .ridings are at stake/’
Nixon also feels their is a
possibility of a “period of bit
terness within the -Conservative
Party in the wake of the Na
tional Leadership Convention in
September.”
“Is it any wonder that specu
lation on the date of an election
has; ranged from some time last
fall ail the way to the spring
of 1968?" asks Nixon.* * »
