CLINTON .NEWS-RECORD, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8. 19737 -7
Former Bayfield resident finds joy •
M religious song wr it ing '
r,
Life in a rural setting is very
rewarding due to the fact that
one can be free to become
creative without the constant
interruptions of urban life. For
Mrs. Lorne (Anita) Sparks,
living on a farm near Lucknow,
this has become an interesting
reality in the form of writing
and publishing her own music.
It all began three years ago
when she was selecting music
for her choirs to sing for a
Carolfest and she longed for a
Christmas carol that would be
very singable and yet have the
true message of Christmas.
Being unable to find what she
desired, she tried writing one.
That year it never developed
beyond the words, tune and
some queer notations as to har-
mony which she alone could
read. When she was asked to
sing a solo she used it playing
her own accompaniment.
In 1971 ,she rewrote it and
her combined choirs sang it in
the Carolfdst which had then
become an annual event. Last
Christmas she was able to
publish it and it was used at
the Carolfest by the
congregation as well as the
choirs. By this time there was
beginning to be some outside
interest shown in this new carol
"It's Christmas Time Again".
It was heard sung by more than
one school choir on CKNX as a
carol by the "lady from
Kinloss".
In the meantime, other
things had been happening. She
was invited to lead the singing
in the spring of 1971 for a Bien-
nial Conference of Presbyterian
women in Wingham. The
theme of the conference was to
be "A Whole New Me" and
Mrs. Sparks wrote a Chorus by
that title in order to make the
conference more meaningful,
Ladies came from all over On-
tario and parts of Quebec. The
chorus was so well liked that
over 600 copies were given
away.
In the spring of 1972, friends
and relatives were urging her
to publish it and the in-
Minitnuin wage
to be increased
Labour Minister Fern Guin-
don announced in the
Legislature today that a
-minimum wage of $2 an hour
for employees in geperal in-
dustry •-will become', 'efgaf've
throughout Ontario on January
1, 1974. Present rate of $1.80
became effective February 1,
1973.
The minimum rate will apply
to all employees except
students under the age of 18,
The student rate will be $1.65
per hour.
The minimum rate for con-
struction employees will in-
crease from $2.05 to $2.25.
Guards on construction sites
will receive the same rate.
Mr. Guindon said the pur-
pose of the minimum wage was
to give workers whose
bargaining power is limited a
measure of protection against
exploitation. He said the
minimum wage would be con-
tinually under review and if
circumstances so warranted, he
would have no hesitation in
recommending further in-
creases in the minimum wage.
Mr. Guindon also proposed
amendments to The Em-
ployment Standards Act on
statutory holidays, annual
vacations and premium pay for
overtime.
The amendments will require
that all employees will receive
four statutory holidays with
pay - Good Friday, Dominion
Day, Labour Day and Christ-
mas Day in 1974. This provision
will be extended to include
New Year's Day, Thanksgiving
Day and Victoria Day as
holidays with pay on January I,
1975,
Effective January 1, 1974, all
employees will be entitled to
two weeks annual vacation
with pay after one year of em-
ployment. At the present time,
an employee receives one week
vacation after the first year and
two weeks vacation after two
years employment.
Beginning January 1, 1975, a
premium rate of 1.1/2 times
regular rate will be required for
all hours worked in excess of 44
hours per week. Previously
overtime rates were required
after 48 hours per week.
