Mr. and Mrs, Joe Murphy, accompanied by their eon, Bill, have' returned after spending three days at Calgary during the Stampede, followed by a trip through Banff and Jasper. Also covering much the same route and now back to report a wonderful holiday with ex- cellent weather are Mr, and Mrs. Frank Mutch. While in Calgary they had a glimpse of the Queen as her motorcade made its way to the Stampede. Mr. and Mrs. J. Leiper of Weston, Ontario, were travelling companions of Mr. and Mrs. Mutch. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Sam Castle flew from Toronto to Calgary where they spent a day at the Stampede. From there they toured Banff, Jasper, on down to Vancouver via Kamloops, followed by e day .in Victoria and are now back in Clinton. By coincidence, the Castles discovered former Clintonians, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Graham, now residents of Goderich, were members of the same tour. Mr. and Mrs. Graham, familiar with the beautiful mountain scenery of Scotland, admitted that the Canadian Rockies have a majestic grandeur all their own whether viewed from the ground or from the air, Now that we have the foregoing wanderers back home we find that a few people around town have been en- joying themselves, The Sum- merhill Community held its an- nual picnic at the Clinton Park last Monday evening, A fortieth wedding anniver- sary celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Seldon Ross, R,R. 1, Brucefield, was held recently at the Hully Gully. Mr. and Mrs. Ross were married in Goderich, July 12, 1933. *5* Warren and Bernard Cud- more, sons of Mr. and Mrs. William Cudmore, of Clinton and formerly of Blyth, are recovering from operations in the Sick Children's Hospital, Toronto, Perhaps, in order of priority, rain is badly needed by the farms, the gardens, birds and wild animals (domestic ones are supposedly cared for), the trees and shrubs along the roadways — and by automobiles. Why the latter? Because rain must be the only form of cleanser some direc- tional signal lights ever receive. A goodly percent of us must have cars with these rear lights which sorely need the dirt removed from. them right now. Some 'are so bad that even a person boasting 20-20 vision could not detect the red flashing light beneath the dust and grime. This can be frustrating to the driver direc-, tly behind who guesses - ----Left Turn? - Right Turn? Straight Ahead? Ye gods! Not Backing Up????? He is!!! Two area men have suc- cessfully completed courses sponsored by the Ontario Good Roads Association it was an- nounced last week. Joseph C. Potter, a road em- ployee of Goderich Township, completed a two year course on 'road and bridge construction and maintenance held at the University of Guelph each year. William H. Taylor of Stanley Township also attended a Ontario Hydra has 'cut its ad- vertising budget by a third and from now on will encourage a "wiser and .more efficient" use of electricity it has been an- pounced by Chairman George Gathercole. In a letter to Ontario's more than 350 municipal utilities, Mr. Gathercole said "a number of changes in Ontario Hydro's policy towards advertising are now under way." He said, "As a .first step, we are altering the direction of our residential marketing program. For many years this has been aimed at securing a more balanced use of our generation and transmission facilities and greater production and distribution economies," However, he said, in these times of rising inflation and mounting concern over the long-term adequacy of resour- ces, "our policy has been inter- preted by many simply as a means of promoting greater consumption. We are, therefore, abandoning it." In the future, he said, the emphasis will be upon achieving "the wise and ef- ficient use of electricity." This shift in course applies most particularly to Ontario Hydra's advertising in the mass circulation media. Mr. Gathercole referred to a long-standing commitment, in co-operation with other sec- tions of the electrical industry, which publicized central air- conditioning in the home, This, he said, will be concluded in June. "Ontario Hydro recognizes that everyone has a respon- sibility to husband our natural resources and with this premise in mind will encourage through its advertising, the wise and ef- ficient use of energy. "We believe that this adjust- ment in advertising policy is realistic in the light of today's social climate and is responsive; to the concerns expressed by many, including the (Ontario Government) Advisory Com- mittee on Energy of the need to encourage the public to avoid the unnecessary consumption of energy and promote the ef- ficient use of all energy sour- ces." "Enforcement measures will be applied gradually," Mr. Auld said, "but our intention is to establish contol over private and commercial accumulations of junked automobiles, When the regulation is fully enforced, the owners of these collections will have to choose either proper disposal or the establishment of a regulated, well.run waste management system." He said those who plan to continue operation will require a certificate, issued only to ap- proved sites and systems. "While the enforcement struc- ture is being developed," he said, "we intend to do our best to encourage people with inoperable cars on their property to have them removed or to cooperate with cleanup programs." Last summer, the Ministry of the Environment sent seven teams of students across On- tario to establish the extent of the abandoned car problem. They conducted surveys around Pembroke, London, Sault Ste. Mkrie, Tiniinins, , ,Kingst&n, Sudbury and Thunder Bay, pinpointing abandoned cars, assessing the willingness of owners to cooperate in cleanup, programs, and encouraging local collection. The survey established that. there are close to 500,000 aban- doned cars in the province. As a result of the survey, some local collection of derelict autos was accomplished, Mr. Auld said, "But in the absence of an organized transport and marketing system for recycling, these collected hulks had to be taken to the nearest landfill site, This summer, $20,000 has. been set aside to get these cars from the landfill sites to where they can be reclaimed as raw metal. In addition, three experimen- tal programs get under way this summer in Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay and in Renfrew and Lanark counties. Ministry waste managem ent. staff estimate that there are, about , 2,700 abandoned pars, to clean , up around Sault Ste. Marie, 7,500 in the Thunder Bay area and 10,000 in the other ex- perimental program area. $80,000 has been set aside in the Ministry's budget to try various cleanup systems in these areas. "Our goal is to determine the most economical system so that we can establish a practical cleanup program next year.It may take two or three years to rid our roads and fields of the backlog of accumulated auto hulks. Even then, we will have to maintain a countinuing program, because the need will remain as long as the people of Ontario continue to drive, and wear out, cars," concluded On- tario's environmental minister, POWDERED DETERGENT 1 Xing Size pkg.
