Colts split -openers
The Clinton Colts opened
their quest for another Ontario
Baseball Association title last
weekend with an opening loss
to Arva by a 7,3 score and a 11-
2 trouncing of Thorndale on
Sunday.
In their Saturday night
debut, Larry Pickett started on
the inound for the Colts but
was chased from the game in
the fourth inning with Arva
leading by a 6-1 count.
Stew MustardcaMe on and
Cooled the Arva bats for the
rest of the game, striking out
nine along the way.
Arva managed to pick up
seven runs from eight hits
The Clinton Senior Soccer
team played to a 3-3 tie with
tthe London Greek Olympians
in a rain plagued contest held
in Clinton last Sunday.
The game had to be called at
half time and will be replayed
at a later date.
Clinton showed that they are
capable of knocking off a good
team as they played an offen-
sive game, proving a lot of hid-
den talent exists in the club.
The Clinton booters took
control of the game early and
were . rewarded with a good
goal by Derwin Carter who
beat the Olympian defence to
the ball and scored from a
sharp right angle. Charlie Lipp
made it 2-0 minutes later after
taking a pass from John
Duddy. •
Olympians rebounded for three
unanswered goals against a
slack Clinton ,defence. Danny
Colquhoun evened the score,
however, by out running the
Olympians defence and
drawing out the goalkeeper and
tucking the ball away neatly in
while the Colts managed only
two runs from six, hits,
Colt Greg Burns led . the
Colts offence with two hits,
while Larry Pickett and Don
Bartliff each picked up a
double. Butch Fleet and Brad
Dutot each got singles.
The Colts completely forgot.
about their Saturday night WO
and came back Sunday after-
noon and trounced Thorndale
by an 11.2 score in a game that
was plagued throughout the af-
ternoon by rain and fin/01010
to be called after eight innings.
Brad Dutot went the distance
for the Colts, striking out seven
the top, right hand corner of
the net.
Because the game was called
at halftime, both teams will
have to battle again at a later
date.
The Clinton forward line of
Derwin Carter, Yeats,
McCallum, Colquhoun, Lipp
and Duddy played extremely
well considering the adverse
field conditions. Fulcher, Har-
vey Carter, Armstrong,
McLachlin, Brian Kennedy,
Fulcher, Riley, Lawson and
Ray Kennedy played defence,
The Clinton club travels to
London's Cove Road Field
Sunday June 10th to take on
the German Canadians. Clin-
ton will then play two home
games.
Work is already underway to
make a new soccer field inside
the Clinton racetrack, The new
field will serve both the seniors
and the minors and will give
the team much needed dressing
rooms,
along the way and"giving up
only three walls to the Angels,
last year's Huron-Perth Cham-
pions.
The game was extremely
close until the fifth inning
when the Colts exploded for
five runs to break a 2-2 tie.
Doc Millar opened the inning
with a walk, followed by Brad
Dutot who tapped a perfect
bunt single, Don Bartliff came
up next and slugged a double
that drove in two runs. Hans
Leppington walked and Danny
Colquhoun reached first on an
error. A passed ball scored
another run and the fifth run
was scored on an infield out.
Larry Pickett led Clinton
with three singles, while Don
Bartliff and Brad Dutot each
picked up doubles. Single went
to Doc Millar, Hans Lep-
pington and Danny Colquhoun.
The Colts journey to Arva
this Sunday afternoon to seek
revenge for their Saturday loss
and return home on Friday,
June 8 to face Exeter.
The Clinton Minor Soccer
League opens this Saturday at
the CHSS playing field when
the Atoms will host the Exeter
team at 9 a.m. The pee wees
play Exeter at 10:30 and the
Mosquitos "A" battle the "B"
team at noon.
In exhibition play last
weekend, Goderich downed the
Mosquito "A" team by an 8-0
count, while the "B" team lost
to Goderich by a 2-0 score, The
Clinton Atom team saved the
day by nipping Goderich by a 1-
0 score.
Teachers trounce
Kinsmen 18 -
Last Thursday, the defending
league champions the teachers,
downed the Kinsmen by an 18-
0 count. Tom Fox was the win-
ning pitcher, aided by home
runs from Bill Craig and John
Brownridge.
Monday night's games were
rained out and will be played
at a later date.
Future games include the
Teachers versus the Colts this
Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
and next Monday sees the Kin-
smen play the Bluebirds at 6:30
p.m. and Holmesville takes on
the teachers at 8:30 p.m.
Although the Clinton Minor
Soccer Association is concerned
with giving boys of all ages a
chance to play a competitive
and healthy sport at a
relatively low cost, it still en-
tails quite a high expense. The'
establishment of the league
could not have been possible
without , the help of the
following sponsors: Kinsmen
Club, Optimist Club, Fish and
Game Club, K.W. Colquhoun
Ltd., Carters Westend Super-
test, and Clinton Crown Lanes,
To raise more funds, the
association is. bringing Donkey
Baseball to Clinton on Monday
June 25 when the Kinsmen will
"horse" around with the Clin-
ton Fire Department.
