Recreationally speaking
By Mike Stephens
I find myself at a distinct disadvantage to all you people
reading this column, You know who I am (thanks to last
week's article) but I don't know who you are. This is
something I hope to rectify before too long.
One of the recreation director's job is to plan, promote and
operate programs for the community he works in.
Before he can go about doing this he must find out what
activities the people of the town want and need; compare
them with what activities we do have and then set up
programs from there.
This is one of my first steps I will be taking here in Clin-
ton, I'd like to conduct a survey of all people of the town to
find out just what is needed. I'm going to need your support.
More details will be given at a later date.
I also have some announcements. On Tuesday night at 9
p.m. I'd like to meet with all the men who are interested in a
men's fitness class. Please don't confuse this with a weight
losers program because it is rather as the name implies- for
fitness. Also on Tuesday at 7 p,m, I'd like to meet with all
the ladies who are interested in arts and crafts programs,
Both these meetings will be held in the auditorium at the
arena and are on January 23, 1973. If you're at all in,.
terested in either of these please mark them down on your
calendar and be sure to attend,
My last words in this column are by way of reminders. We
do have two public skating time periods; Wednesday from 2
p.m.-4 p.m, and again on Sunday from 2 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.
Come on out and skate for some fun and exercise, Let's see
some real support for the arena.

Colts capture "Li" championship at Milverton
A breakaway goal by Joe
Livermore in the sudden death
overtime period gave the Clin-
ton Colts a well-deserved 6.5
victory over Arthur and the
"B" Championship trophy at
Milverton's Second Annual In-
termediate Tournament last
Sunday, The team's captain,
Ken Doer accepted the
Molson's II" trophy from the
W.O.A,A. convener, Jim Green
on behalf of the club, In the 'A'
Championship the Thorndale
Intermediates defeated the
Milverton Four-Wheel Drives
5.4, Along with the trophy the
Colt: received a $25 cash
award.
Livermore's goal came after
only 28 seconds of sudden
death play and was assisted by
linemates Larrie -Colquhoun
and Butch Fleet, It was his
second goal of the game. Other
Colt marksmen were Bruce
Lyndon, Don Bartliff and Ken
Daer with a pair of goals,
After losing the first game of
the tournament Friday night to
Atwood, the Colts bounced
back to defeat the Elora Rocks
4-1 Saturday afternoon and ad-
vance to the '13' finals against
Arthur,
After the final game of the
tournament the IVIilsa.rton of-
ficials announced that the Clin-
ton Colt's defenceman and
team captain, Ken Daer, had'
been voted the most valuable
player in the tournament, At
centre-ice ceremonies Ken ac-
cepted the Molson's top player
award from Molson's represen-
tative, Joe Dunsmore. Ken
should be proud of this
recognition as the hockey talent
at the tournament Was very ex-
ceptional. Runner-up to Daer
for top player was Thordale's
defenceman, Jeff Craig. Colts
goalie, Dennis Fleischauer who
played in all the games was
very sharp and was voted run-
ner-up to Wayne Parkinson of
Thorndale for top goaltender in
the tournament.
The Colts return to league
play tonight (Thursday) when
they host the Milverton Four-
Wheel Drives at the Com-
munity Centre at 8:30, This is
the team the Colts must defeat
in the playoffs and tonight's
game should be another hard-
hitting, fast skating encounter,
Again the fan turnout at the
tournament last weekend was
excellent and your support is
gratefully appreciated.
See you tonight at the arena!
Game time is 8:30 p.m.!
An open letter to all minor hockey fans
he Tavistock goalie knocks down a shot by Clinton Mustang captain Gary Cummings
uring a game last Sunday in Clinton. The red-hot 'Stangs have run up a six game winning
treak and play two home games in Clinton this weekend, one against Strathroy Friday
ight and against Tavistock Sunday night. The Mustangs now have a firm hold on fifth spot,
News-Record photo)
Clinton Mustangs scored
three unanswered goals in the
first period, the game winner
coming at 17:38 to defeat the
Mitchell Hawks 6-3 last Thur-
sday.
Mike Anstett's goal proved
to be the winner. Brian Ken-
nedy and Jim Cameron drew
assists on the play.
Randy Millar opened the
scoring at 6:39 in the first
period when he was set up in
front of the net by Dan
Colquhoun and Gary Cum-
mings. Mitchell tied the game
up on an unassisted goal by R.
MacDonald. Clinton then came
to life and scored three unan-
swered goals. The first came at
11:52 on a hard slapshot from
the point by Cameron. Cum-
mings set the shot up. At 17:24
Cummings finished off a nice
rush by scoring on a quick wrist
shot into the top right hand
corner. Cameron and
Colquhoun received assists.
Fourthen seconds later Anstett
scored his goal on a nice shot
from the slot. The first period
ended 4-1.
Clinton slacked off a bit in
the second period and got a lit-
tle sloppy. The defence seemed
to have trouble clearing the
puck from their own end. Only
brilliant goaltending by Gary
Yeomen kept the score down to
a minimum. A• Strohm scored
for Mitchell at 9:58. At 17:03
Clinton scored on a two man
breakaway. Using Wayne
MacDougall as a decoy, Ronny
Graham moved up the right
boards into the slot area and
let a quick and 'hard shot go
which the Mitchell goalie had
no chance on. The score ended
up 5-2 after two periods.
Clinton came back stronger
in the third period, and
managed to score at 2:43.
Colquhoun picked up the
rebound from Cal Fremlin's
shot from the point, and tucked
it away nicely. Cummings also
drew an assist on the play. Mit-
chell scored at 13:13 with a
goal going to P. Chessell to end
the scoring at 6-3.
Gary Yeomen turned back 30
shots by the Hawks. Yeomen
made numerous good saves to
keep the Mustangs alive in
times of trouble.
The Mustangs penalty killing
was exceptional as Mitchell
could score only one power play
goal on the Mustangs, There
were 16 penalties altogether,
including two fighting majors
and two double-minors for
roughing. Mitchell received
nine of theie Penalties.
Brian "Sly" Kennedy
coached the team to victory as
Coach Bill Weber was home
suffering from an injury
received in an earlier game.
This was Clinton's fifth victory
in as many games.
The Clinton Mustangs
downed the Tavistock Braves
7.3 in a penalty filled game on
Sunday night. Clintons record
is now 10-8-3 and gives the
Mustangs a firm hold on fifth
spot.
Clinton struck early for three
quick goals by Bill Crawford,
Randy Millar, and Tom
Murray. The first 10 minutes
was the best of the game for
Clinton. The Mustangs com-
pletely outplayed Tavistock in
the early part of the game. The
first •period ended 3-1.
The second period was Clin-
ton's all the way, although they
seemed to be a different team
than the team that had started.
The Mustangs got two goals
from Paul Johnson and
another goal from Millar to
give the home team a 6-2 edge
after two periods.
Referee M. Butcher was in-
jured with just over four
minutes remaining in the
second period, and the teams
left the ice and the four
minutes was played after a 10
minute rest.
Each team scored a goal in
the final period, Clinton
coming on a nice shot by Pete
Thayer. The third period saw
the majority of the game's
penalties, as both teams began
to fight"' each otheik--'cliecking.
Two fights broke out in the
third period. Coincidentally
one behind each net.
There was a total of 26
penalties called, including four
fighting majors and two game
misconducts. '
The Mustangs wish to thank
the fans again for their support.
There was good turnout at
Mitchell and at Clinton for the
games. The Mustangs play at
home this Friday against
Strathroy at 8:30, and on Sun-
day against Tavistock at 8. The
team would appreciate some
more fan support. They would
like to feel they're representing
Clinton and area not just them-
selves.
The Fish and Game Bantams
returned to their winning ways
Wednesday in Seaford), with
an easy 8-1 victory and bombed
that same team again Saturday
at 14-2.
Eight difeerent players
shared the scoring Wednesday
with Archibald, Paul Gibbings,
McMahon, Clynick, Flynn,
Counter, Priestap and
Colquhoun doing the damage.
Saturday, Colquhoun hit for
five, Mike Gibbings, three,
Heard and McMahon two each
with singles to Flynn and
There are approximately 175
boys taking part in our hockey
program. The Wee Wees are
under the supervision of
Murray Taylor and Bryan
Marriage, and even when both
are present, 40 boys are too
many for these two men to
skate, watch and supervise.
Surely there are other parents
who can be present and help
tighten skates or even change
them, so that they are on the
right feet.
The Novice are supervised by
John Lawson and Don Lobb,
and are divided into four house
league teams. Each of these
four teams has a high school
boy as coach, and these boys
are to be commended on their
attendance and effort. Clinton
has never entered an "all star"
Novice team in W.O.A.A.,
preferring to treat all Novice
age boys as stars. It is hoped
that all Novices will be given
game competition during the
year, by playing exhibition
games with the neighbouring
towns.
The Pee Wee's are all
playing in League competition,
The second half of House
League time was devoted to
practice, conducted by Ken
Clynick. This policy has been
followed all year by the Ban-
tam House League, i.e. one
game per week, and the third
team practices, and this will be
enforced as far as possible in
'die Pee' VVee' Ho'use League
hereafter. Failure of members
from the third team to show up
for their practice session can
result in their being benched
for the next game,
Their will be no house league
on Saturday, January 20 but
all PeeWees will be taking part
in Minor Hockey Week-end,
The "B's" playing Blyth at 11
and the "A's" playing New
York at 4 p,m.
House League will resume on
January 27, with the Canucks
playing the Leafs at 3:30. This
will be followed at 4:30 by a
practice session, and at 5:30 the
PeeWee "B"s will be at home
to the Monkton PeeWee "B"s.
form
Prleatap.
In league play the team have
eight wins two losses and two
ties. In tournament play, they
have three wins, two losses and
one tie with an overall record
of 11-4-3. They have scored 131
goals in 18 games while giving
up 68.
Don't forget to support
Minor Hockey Weekend Friday
evening and all day Saturday.
Come out to see all Clinton's
Minor Hockey Players in ac-
tion.
The 'A's, under Geo. Divok and
Mel Hohner, are entered in
W.O.A.A. and the "B"s under
,Gord Harkes, in their league of
4 "13" teams from neighbouring
towns.
There are only enough Pee
Wees to form three house
league teams, thus two teams
play one game each week and
the third team practises. There
is a definite need for managers
in this division i.e„ a man who
will be present every Saturday
and see that his team is dressed
in time, and coach them from
the players box.
The Bantams are also
playing in league competition.
The "A"s, under Bill Counter
and Chester Archibald are en-
tered in W.O.A.A. while the
'B's coached by Dick Carter,
are playing in their league of 4
"B" House League teams, and
this division has been operating
very smoothly, under Dick Car-
ter, Gerry Holmes and Dennis
Fleischauer - one game per
week and the third team prac-
tises.
The Midget team is being
handled by Bob Cook and Pat
The Canadiens and the Leafs
played the 3:30 game last
Saturday, despite the fact that
neither team had a coach or a
manager present. The Leafs
had 11 members present and
the Canadiens had 9. Andy
Jamieson filled in as goalie for
the Canadiens, at the last
niihute, when their regular
goalie failed to dress.
In the play, it was Dan Proc-
tor who made the difference,
scoring four unassisted goals.
The Leafs fifth goal was scored
by Bill Brautigan on an assist
from Jim Craig.
The Canadiens'only goal was
scored by Jeff Ball, assisted by
Grant Morgan.
Graham. There are only 16
boys in this age group.
An effort was made to
organize a Juvenile team at the
first of the season, but not a
single player registered for this
age group. There must be some
hockey players in this group
who are not in any organized
team, not on the Junior 'D',
and ineligible to play in the In-
dustrial league by reason of at-
tending school,
Minor hockey has been very
fortunate in their referees, both
the qualified and the "uncar-
decl". We have received no
criticism from the visiting
teams, and only the usual from
the home fans. However, some
of these referees will be leaving
in a year or two, and we should
have more available. R,J,

Boussey has volunteered to
coach those boys who may be
interested in doing some
refereeing, and we hope that we
can get at least 10 or 12 to try a
hand at "reffing". If you are in-
terested, 1Qt us know at once,
Game reporting is one aspect
that has been very slack this
year. Now that you knovir who
is in charge of each and every
team, you know who should be
putting something in the paper
each week, Let's see if we can't
get a few more stories and a
few more scores in the paper.
Finally, a word of thanks to
all those service clubs who are
donating money and equipment
to minor hockey. We hope that
we use your money to good ad-
vantage. And we would be
happy to attend any of your
meetings and explain in detail
how we are using your money,
Also, a special thank you to
those individuals who donate
trophies and prizes. Be sure to
be there when they are presen-
