Good drivers “pump” their
brakes when 'the need arises, for
'fast deceleration; that is, they
apply, then release their brakes
repeatedly Ip rapid succession.
This reduces the danger of skid
ding, and is recommended par
ticularly when the road surface
is slippery. But there is one
potential danger in this tech
nique that is little realized, says
the Ontario Safety League, If
one of the brake lights is not
functioning, “pumping” give's
the effect of a turn signal to
the Other brake light, which
could mislead following traffic.
Thlis is an additional reason
why 'all car lights should be
checked frequently, arid replac
ed immediately when necessary.
The Now York State Thru-
way Authority has prohibited
the drinking of alcohol or the
possession of an open bottle
anywhere on the 559-mile ex
pressway. The penalty, design
ed to curtail drinking on char
ter buses and in picnic and rest
areas, is $250 or 30 days in jail
or both,
The Ontario Safety League
reports, that the Thruway 'Chair
man, in announcing the new
regulation said: “Alcohol has
more to do With accidlents’ than
is generally realized, or can be
proved in court. By attempting
to eliminate its' presence on the
Thruway, we hope to reduce
sharply the number of accidents
we must naw label ‘cause un
known’”.

The Ontario Motor League-
Taronto Club recently complet
ed the Installation of 386 emer
gency call boxes on the Don
Valley Parkway and the Gar
diner Expressway, to benefit
stranded motorists. This valu
able public service has provided
same interesting data on .the
causes of breakdowns, says the
Ontario Safelty League. “Out of
gas" is by far the most common
cause of stoppage •— as well as
being the easiest to--avoid. Each
such breakdown, in rush hours
tends to slow down the whole
flow of traffic,- and! Larry
Brundage, Managing Director
of the Club comments- dryly:
“Since it coSts no more, to drive
from the top half of a tank
than it does from the bottom
half, it behooves the motorist
to ba more conscious of hlis re
sponsibilities”.
