I'Ve tried to figure out why I’m on guard the.moment I see a case-toting male at my door. Usually he is friendly enough; generally he is well-mannered and polite; always he is anx ious to be of service . . . but still, my inner being tells me to beware. I had another attack of this curious malady the other day When a salesman, a long-time agent in the area, knocked on my door. My first impulse was to ignore his presence (maybe he’ll go away, I thought) but the blare of the television and the cries of my infant had no doubt assured him that I was Withip, N After a moment or two of de ciding just which excuse I would use this time, I approach ed the door like an infantry man would scout v around the next bend. Subconsciously, I guess, I had hoped the mom ent’s delay would have discour aged my visitor or even bet ter, that the ground had swal lowed him up . . . but alas, he stood firm, nodding and smiling, “Hello, may I have a For Fall Dinners 1 Now that kids are back, to School and dad hias. resigned himself to another year of lab our, appetites are usually better. Shirley Keller ;1 few minutes of your time?" I All ■ my standard rejections i were poured put like a broken ; record, “Not today, I’m too busy” and “My baby is cry- ; ing" and “I really don't need anything” and “I'm pretty well ' stocked, thank you," I told him. Then came the shocker, This gallant intruder said he’d noticed my hesitancy on previous occasions. He wanted the truth about my reluctance to purchase, not a bunch of ex cuses he’d heard at a thousand doons from thousands of women. I admired his forthright question. I had thought I had spurned his sales pitches so subtly he would never have noticed I seldom bought any thing. Now, I learned the facts. I was wasting his valuable time and he wanted to know whether this trend was apt’ to continue. • With my heart in my mouth and my eyes glued to the floor, I explained that I preferred to shop in a store to make my sel ections without pressure at my leisure. I assured him it was nothing personal and certainly no slight on his company. He smiled once more, agreed that it was my choice to make and left without further adieu. . Thunderstruck, I watched him get into his car and drive away. I had expected, I think, that he would attempt to set my house ablaze or kick me in the shins or snarl at my chil dren if I told him simply I did n’t want him to call. I realized now that this 'is a free country,’ I am the mistress of my house with a perfect right to refuse to buy if that is my desire and salesmen are busy businessmen with many interested customers to see. I’m indebted to that sales man, for he taught me a les son in living. Honesty is the best policy, even though it sometimes hunts more to tell the truth than to hear it.
