The meeting was opened by singing “What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” fol­ lowed by prayer by Rev. Mair. The new W.M.S. president, Mrs. H. Delbridge presided. 'Mrs. Gil­ bert Johns read the scripture lesson and roll call was answered by paying of fees. Thank-you notes from boxes and parcels and from Huron County Home for donation sent, were read. Mrs. Chas. Stephen had charge of the program consisting of a reading by Horace Delbridge, “Grandma and Sea Gull”; a solo by Mrs. Hahn; a minstrel show. After closing hymn and Bene­ diction, a bible contest and a baby naming contest were en­ joyed by the group. Lunch was served at the close. Badminton Club Heads League . At the end. of the first half of the schedule of the Huron* IPerth “B” Badminton League, our team from Exeter was lead­ ing with both Stratford and 'Clin­ ton close behind. The team con­ solidated its position last Thurs­ day night by defeating Stratford by a score of seven matches to five/ The Exeter team was composed of the following players: Bob Dinney, Doug Knowles, Merlin Mode, Doug Grayer, Ernie Har­ ris, Harry Den 'Roer, Jud Arm­ strong, Nell Armstrong, , Ethel IMode, Dean Morley,' Marion Knowles, Ada Dinney and Irene Beaupre. Today’s price THE BEET SUGAR INDUSTRY 'Sugar beets do not absolutely require any given type of soil. However, the large amount of labour entailed makes it un­ profitable to raise beets on poor soil, the amount of work being nearly as great, but with much reduced yields. The soil should be fertile, deep and preferably of a texture easy to ,work. On the whole, a medium loam or good clay loam is most satis­ factory. , The subsoil also should be easily penetrable. The roots ex­ pand enormously during growth and the tap root and its tribu­ taries should be able to extend several feet downwards and later­ ally. A subsoil which 'has a thard pan layer near the surface is particularly detrimental. Soil should be of an intermediate texture, also, as the roots have rather high air requirements. W.I Hold Regular Meeting The regular meeting of Women’s Institute was held January 18, with an attendance of forty.Vice-President Mrs. Lloyd Eng­ land presided for the business period. A great many letters of appreciation 'were read, also ver­ bal expressions on behalf of shtit-ihs who had been remem­ bered during the holiday season. Plans were made for a social evening and euchre to be held on February 7. The program was under the direction of Mrs. 'W. Gaiser, when a piano duet by Mrs. E. M. Fahrner and Miss Norma Fahrner was enjoyed. Mrs. J. Wade favoured the meet­ ing with two readings, “Patrio­ tic Creed” and “Educating Mother.” A vocal duet was sung by Misses Joyce Chambers and Arliss Wein, after which a very interesting and helpful .address On “Citizenship and Education” was given by Mrs. H« F, Currie.
