The Citizen, 2009-11-26, Page 25Brussels Majestic Women’sInstitute attended a ROSE sessionhosted by Walton Women’s InstituteNov. 18.Seven Walton members greeted 10Majestic members and one guest forthe monthly meeting in the basement
of the Brussels Library at 1:30 p.m.
Margaret McMahon introducedRuth Axtmann, who with herhusband, had toured South Africa thispast summer. There are 11 officiallanguages there such as Zulu andSwazi. The food was excellent withmany native dishes being served.
Squash and pumpkin are used a lot,
some of being deep fried (theirversion of muffins). Creamedspinach is also a favourite.Apartheid was in existence from1943-1998, and separation of races isstill used, but not enforced.Ruth has a slide of Nelson
Mandella’s cell where he stayed for
18 years. It was very basic.
The natives who served in the
hotels, as well as their children were
very willing to perform native dances
and sing native songs.
Their house roofs are thatched to
the ground and the native women do
a lot of weaving and beading skirts by
hand.
Wives are purchased with cattle.
The average price for a wife is 10-12
cattle. Most men are employed and
each family has a native home as well
as a traditional one. The government
helps poor families to have homes.
Ruth stayed at a place called
Pilgrim’s Rest in a mining town. The
trees have purple blooms in spring
and are very colourful. Most farms
are 20,000-40,000 hectares. They
raise beef and sheep and grow
pineapples. The beef is very tough
and stringy to eat.
Near where Ruth stayed is a
museum showing how Dutch farmers
migrated from south to central Africa.
Carvings on the walls of the museum
depict their journey.
There are lots of open air markets
and flea markets.
Most of the natives walk, use
bicycles or have cars. The native
people are very proud of their culture.
Victoria Falls was very beautiful,
but did not have a lot of water, as the
water comes through the rock and is
submerged.
Margaret then introduced GinahKugba-Nyande, from Walton. She isthe wife of the Walton United Churchminister. Ginal comes from WestAfrica, which has a very differentculture. Ginah is a seamstress and hasproduced many beautiful and varied
clothing. Wedding gowns are tie-
dyed, with very small pleats. The
designs are very uniform and
intricate. She does not use patterns,
but measures a woman for clothing.
A lot of the women will sit for
hours beading cloth. The beads are
very tiny and take a long time to
produce. The common food in West
Africa is rice and cassava (potato). It
can be used in a powdered form, raw
or roasted. Palm oil is used as well as
sweet potato leaves, plantain (large
green bananas), black eyed beans,
fish and okra.
All the children wear uniforms to
school. If people are hard-working
they have money and can purchase
what they want. Some people change
cars every year. Most people in West
Africa are Muslim or Christian.
Margaret McInroy then talked
about her African safari. She stayed
on game reserves and slept in lodges,
in east-Central Africa near Tanzania.
They could not walk unescorted afterdark, as the wild animals wandered atwill. They were so close to theanimals on safari that they could haverolled down the windows and pettedthem. She showed slides of zebra,
elephants, tigers, emus, and hippos.
They used mosquito netting at
night to prevent the spread of
malaria.
The children go to boarding school,
at least 30 miles away. They stay for
three months, come home for three
months, then repeat.
Most think and hear that Africa is a
poor nation, but all the tour guides
have cell phones. Each area in Africa
is unique.
Helen Craig thanked the speakers.
While lunch was being served
Majestic held a short meeting
