Sorry to hear that Ralph McCrea is
back in Clinton hospital. We hope he
will soon be home to stay.
Blyth United Church and the
board of stewards would like to say
thank you to all who helped make
their silent auction and beef supper a
success. There were many articles to
bid on.
BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Nov. 22 was Barb
Richmond. Ushering were Joann
MacDonald, Brenda Brooks and
Terry Richmond. Deb Hakkers ran
the power point.
Emily Phillips welcomed
everyone to church in Rev. GaryClark’s absence. She dreweveryone’s attention to theannouncements in the bulletin andthanked those who supported thestewards in their successful silentauction and beef supper. She noted the new sign on thelawn of the church. The UCW potluck supper is on
Thursday, Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m. and
the Sunday school are having a
potluck supper on Saturday, Nov. 28
at 6 p.m.
The call to worship was followed
by the first hymn, For the Fruit of All
Creation and the Prayer of
Approach. The scripture readings
were Luke 10: 25-37 and John 21:
15-17.
The children were asked to come
to the front of the church for their
story time. Gideon Garrett helped
Emily light the candles at the front
of the church.
Emily asked them if they
understood the scriptures she had
just read about the Good Samaritan.
She explained to them that they were
like the Good Samaritan when theysent goats to the children in Paderand when they collected schoolsupplies and money for uniformsand sent it to Pader. They said a prayer before goingdownstairs to their time of worshipand fellowship. The next hymn was, When INeeded a Neighbour.
Emily’s message to the adults was,
Give a Little, Do A Lot. Everyone
needs neighbours. People in small
towns are lucky to know their
neighbours.
As Christians, people are asked to
go out and tell of God’s love.
Through missions and services the
congregation and the UCW
contribute to help people in other
countries and also in their own. Just
a little can go along way.
The oldest magazine in Canada is
the United Church Observer which
receives a grant from the mission
and service. Emily challenged
everyone to just put a loonie in
their envelope each Sunday and
see how much they can send
to the mission and service
committee.
The choir anthem, One Little
Candle was followed by the prayer
of confession and the hymn,
Homeless People Will You Listen. The offering was receivedfollowed by the prayers for the worldand the singing of The Lord’s Prayer.
It was a short ride, but what a
journey.
Along with 26 other athletes,
Blyth resident Jory-Lynn Uyl was
selected to play for the Fanshawe
Falcons varsity soccer team.
At the end of regular season play,
the Falcons recorded eight wins, two
ties and one loss. Uyl was sixth on
the leaders scoreboard for all
Ontario colleges.
Clinching the divisional title, the
Falcons advanced to the OCAA
(Ontario College Athletic
Association) provincial tournament
in Vaughan. Fanshawe defeated
Sheridan College from Oakville and
Durham College from Toronto, to
capture the provincial gold medal.
Fanshawe advanced to the CCAA
(Canadian College Athletic
Association) national
championships, held in Vaughan,
where five other teams from Canada
met to achieve the same goal, the
honours of being the best in Canada.
Teams competing were Kwantlen
Polytechnic University, from British
Columbia, Concordia University
College of Alberta, Mount Saint
Vincent University from Nova
Scotia, College Francois-Xavier-
Garneau from Quebec, Fanshawe
College from London and the host
team Humber College from Toronto.
Fanshawe won the first game
against Nova Scotia 2-0.
To get to the gold medal match,
the Falcons had to win against
Quebec. After a full game and two
overtime periods the winner was
decided by a five-on-five shootout.
Fanshawe came out on top with a 4-
2 victory.
In the final gold medal match
Fanshawe met up with Concordia.
Alberta scored first but late in the
first half Uyl scored, tying the game.
Both teams played a strong
competitive game in the second half.
After regulation time had expired,
the referee indicated a three-minute
additional injury playing time.
Alberta managed to score with one
minute remaining.
Even though Fanshawe came
home with the silver, this was the
first year since the tournament
began in 1991 that an Ontario team
has made it to the Gold Medal
Match at Nationals.
At the awards ceremony, Uyl
received the all-star Canadian team
award and was named the Ontario
College Athlete of the Week.
It was a great season, said Uyl.
“We were not expected to make it to
provincials. But the more we played
together on and off the field the
stronger we got. We all go all the
way next year.”
