PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2009.
You’d think we were expecting
special company in Brussels. Houses
are getting decorated, Christmas
lights are up already and the main
street festive lights are being
installed as I get this ready for the
paper.
Right, Santa Claus is coming to
town! The parade route is set, people
are getting their Saturday plans
finalized, the red suit has been
cleaned and ready for another year.
Be sure to be ready to see Santa at
5 p.m. this Saturday during the
parade or later at the Community
Centre. Skates and hot dogs are
optional.
Goodbyes were said this week to
two long-term residents of our
village. Bernice MacFarlane, spouse
of Tom, spent many pleasant years
making the neighbourhood pretty
with her interest in flowerbeds. She
was generous with her plants and
knowledge and I’m sure many in the
south end of our village can point to
plants that came from Bernice’s
garden.
Declining health over the years
robbed us of a good soul.
My memories of daughter Joyceinvolve her part in Brussels bandtattoos and her very important job ofkeeping dad Tom in step.Brussels sports lost a big fan withAl Nichol heading to heaven lastweek. A blue jacket was often seenon Al, I’m sure reminding him ofsome good times with hockey teams, many of them over the years. A life-
long passion for sports, and life in
general made “Nic” a good man for
discussions.
Partner Elaine, along with sons
Murray and Kevin, would love to
hear some of your stories about
times spent with Al.
The production, Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
was seen by several Watsons and
friends on Saturday at Centre in the
Square in Kitchener. Ralph’s brother
John is the president this year for the
K-W Musical Productions, a
volunteer group that enjoys theatre
and are willing to sacrifice a lot of
time to be part of a production.
Joseph is all music and dance and
the talent level is pretty high making
for an afternoon of true enjoyment.
John and Wendy’s daughter
Christine has been dancing for years
and as the dance captain she
demonstrated her talent and amazing
agility.
John was in a little more sedate
role than Christine, no splits or back
flips in his parts, but well done
anyway.
By Sunday we’re into the season
of Advent, a time in the Christian
year to begin preparation for the
symbolic birth of Jesus.Commercially, we’re encouraged toget out there and support theeconomy, the sooner the better tomake this season great.Personally, each of us needs totake stock of the importance of theChristmas message – peace, joy, hope and love. Use this time in theAdvent and Christmas season to
improve the hope, peace, joy and
love in your life. It’s your choice.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

The Brussels Legion Branch was
saddened with the news of the
passing of Ordinary member Allan
Nichol. He was a Legion member
for 37 years and served as president
of the Branch. He had served in the
reserves and was stationed in
Toronto.
Al made his professional life as a
carpenter for many years in the
Brussels area. He was an avid
angler, hunter and sports enthusiast.
He played soccer and hockey and
coached minor hockey in Brussels.
He was the coach of the Brussels
PeeWee team that captured the
Young Canada Hockey
championship.
Al was married to Elaine and they
had two boys Murray and Kevin.
The graveside service was held on
Saturday at Brussels Cemetery, led
by Padre Sandra Cable. The
luncheon followed the service at the
Legion.
Our condolences to Elaine,
Murray and Kevin and family and
the extended family.
The Thursday night darts saw the
first-place team being Greta Zehr,
Lawrence Machan and Roger
McHardy. In second were Kaye
Smith and John Harrison. The high
shot of the night was by Harry
Smith with 128 and the high finish
was by Sharon Robbins with a 78.
The Friday night supper of roast
beef was enjoyed by a great crowd
of almost 60. This week will be
spareribs. Thanks to Ross and Cora
Alcock and Mabel and Sharon
Glanville for helping with the
cleanup.
Comrades Mabel Glanville,
Sharon Robbins, Linda Bird, Jo-
Ann McDonald and Deb Cann were
on hand to help with the funeral
luncheon for the Nichol family on
Saturday.
The early-bird membership drive
is winding down with only about 10
days left. Pay your dues at the
reduced rate before the end of
November and get in the final draw
to win your dues for 2011. Mabel
Willis and Gary Dauphin are the
first two winners and you could be
the third. Drop in today and be an
early bird.
Calendars, calendars, calendars.
We need Comrades to come into the
Branch and pick up some calendars
to sell for the Branch. This is a
major fundraiser for the Branch.
The calendars are for 2010, so
they have to be out before the end of
the year. The calendars feature
coming events in the Brussels,
Walton, Ethel, Cranbrook
Moncrieff, Bluevale and Belgrave
areas.

been chosen to carry the 2010
Olympic torch.
The 19-year-old grandson of Rita
and Leo Deitner of the Brussels
area, is the third child of their
daughter Cathy and her husband
Jean Marc. Beneteau has a genetic
deletion of gene 17, a rare disease
shared with only six other people in
the world. He has over-extended
joints, lax tendons and under-
developed muscles as a result.
His mother said he was only
expected to live three years at the
most and they were told he would
never walk. Now he will be be
running the torch for 30 metres of a
300-metre portion.
“I couldn’t be more proud of him,”
said his mother.
Beneteau was selected by the
Leamington torchbearer committee,
along with nine other students from
Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary
School.
Beneteau will be running the torch
mid-morning on Dec. 23.
