Erin Bolger, who grew up in Blyth and now lives in Toronto and her book The Happy Baker, A Dater’s Guide to Emotional Baking, have been nominated for a Gourmand World Cookbook Award. Now on a cross-Canada tour, Bolger said she was “completely shocked” by the news. She said that she was told of the awards by a friend who is a food photographer. “Being the competitive person I am, I sent off three books the end of June to the head office in Spain.” Bolger said she has been so busy since organizing the tour and promoting the book that she completed forgot about the awards until learning she was a nominee. “I got the news as I was just setting up for my book signing in Ottawa last week at Chapters.” Bolger’s cookbook is a collection of favourite recipes that typify her rural upbringing. Some have been passed down through generations, while others are some familiar dishes to which she has added a dash of her own style. But what makes the book unique is that the recipes are matched with Bolger’s personal dating stories. As a nominee, Bolger is invited to attend the awards ceremony Feb. 12- 15 in Paris, France. “I am hoping I can attend. It would be a great event to network and hopefuly get a publishing deal in other countries,” said Bolger, who self-published The Happy Baker. “I am so happy with the response my book has received and I will try to do Huron County proud.” By Bonnie Gropp The Citizen “The Voyage That Shook The World” Australian-made documentary revisits Charles Darwin’s famous voyage on The Beagle.
