The Citizen, 2009-11-12, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2009. A visit to Blyth Theatre last Thursday evening was a real mood elevator. Accomplished pianist Jon Kimura Parker born, raised and educated in Vancouver showed us what years of practise with education and talent could produce. His list of schools, awards andperformances is very impressive andnow as a member of Piano Plus, heshares his gifts widely. This projectensures that great music is availableoutside urban areas. It was kind of neat to hear him talkabout being in Iqualuit and on theApex Road, the only paved roadthere. Both Sheila Richards and Iknew the spot, as Peter Workman had taken us there on our visits. As the music of Beethoven, Stravinsky,Adams, Corea and Parker floated over the audience, a peaceful mood with enthusiastic appreciation was evident. A pretty proud Grandma, Nora Stephenson, watched as Dianne and Mark’s daughter graduated fromWalkerton District SecondarySchool recently. From the awardsthat Katie won, she’s a girl we’d alllike to be with and one Grandpa Doccould handle just fine. She wonawards for participation and spirit, aswell as the physical education award, the academic excellence award andKatie was also an Ontario Scholar aswell as the valedictorian for her class. Pretty impressive and well done. Another young lady to watch as she continues her education at the University of Guelph. The United Church was celebrating on Sunday - 133 years. A Celtic service and remembering our roots was enjoyed by thecongregation and visitors.Glenda Morrison, with our choir, offered special music and a specialtreat and moments of heavenlymusic were provided by the Beardfamily. Harps, cello, piano and voicewere all offered to our delight andappreciation.A good church lunch was enjoyedby all. Thanks ladies. It’s a good thing I had an extra dose of tranquil music lately, as Philip is home from Alberta for the next week. So life as Ralph and I know it, is temporarily gone. Oh what fun, granddaughters to visit, catching Uncle Philip up on their lives, an extra dog on site and all the coming and going involved with a wedding in Wingham. Ah … Bye now, Betty G.W. The Centre for Applied Renewable Energy has announced that David Blaney has been appointed executive director. Previous to this appointment Blaney was the program manager for the Centre. Joan van der Meer, the Centre’s previous project manager has been hired as the project manager for the Huron Business Development Corporation’s Green Jobs Strategy project. By Jo-Ann McDonald The Thursday night dart league at the Brussels Legion had 15 darters taking aim at the boards. The first- place team was trio of Gordon Rutledge, Marlene Little and Catrina Josling. In second place were Harry Smith and Sandra Josling. High shots for the night were made by Sharon Robbins with 128 and by Gord Jacklin shooting 120. The high takeout was by Sandra ending the game by shooting a 77. The Friday night supper of chicken and rice was enjoyed by nearly 35 folks. This week will be roast pork. Our thoughts are with Gord Nichol as he is a patient in Wingham hospital. We hope he is feeling better real soon. The annual craft show and bake sale was held on Saturday. A smaller amount of vendors were able to attend this year, with only 10 with displays. There was knitting, Tupperware, epicure, enjo, wood crafts, Christmas crafts, floral arrangements and baking. The show was only for the one day this year and the morning saw a steady crowd of people. The soup and sandwich lunch was enjoyed by just over 40. Saturday was also the launch of the Brussels and Area Community Events calendar for 2010. The calendar is a fundraising venture for the Brussels Legion with funds going to the accessibility project for the Branch. The Brussels and Area Community Event calendar is the Brussels Legion’s project for 2010. The calendar has included events from Brussels, Walton, Cranbrook, Ethel, Bluevale and Belgrave. Comrades Jo-Ann McDonald and Linda Bird have been working on the project for the past six months. The idea was to have the events for the month at a glance of a page. Organizations, groups, churches and more were contacted about their plans for 2010. We appreciated the efforts made by the groups to try and make the decisions and be included on the calendar. We are hoping the calendar is a success this year and that more organizations will want to be involved for next year. Comrades Jo-Ann and Linda also approached area businesses for advertising in the calendar and appreciated the positive response from all who were approached. Comrade Doris Hood has done a marvelous job of typing the dates, scanning the pictures, arranging the business cards and having it ready for the printers in the format needed. Comrade LeeAnn Konarski also helped with designing a few business cards for the calendar. The calendar includes contact information for many of the local service clubs, community halls, sports groups and organizations and service times for the local churches.. Every month features pictures from various events that take place in the community. It was a surprise to me, that many of the groups had no pictures of their events, so we express our appreciation to The Citizen for allowing the use of their pictures of events. The Brussels Community Event calendar is available for the reasonable price of $10 and will be available at the Brussels Legion and area businesses. Watch for the Community Calendar posters in windows.
