Two couples from the village
have returned from trips that I
thought the rest of you might
enjoy reading about. I believe
we need to share these experiences
so others can enjoy them
vicariously. Perhaps that will
encourage others to try something
new if the opportunity arises.
Bill and Rena Kolkman left
Londesborough with their motor
home on March 25 and headed for
Willis Point on Vancouver Island.
When they left there was snow
on the ground here but the
daffodils were blooming in
Victoria.
For the time they spent on the west
coast they report that the weather
was not as warm as usual. The
Kolkmans arrived home the latter
part of May.
Rena’s sister, Martha Harriot, lives
in the same area and the two women
had a chance again to
catch up on each other’s lives.
Martha’s daughter, Katrina, was
being married early this summer and Rena would likely enjoy hearing about all those preparations.Rena noted that she and Bill tooka trip out to the coast two years agoand took in a great many of thetourist sites at that time. But sheremarked that the Rockies alwaysare a breathtaking sight.
The Kolkmans were house and
dog sitting for a friend for seven
weeks. The home they lived in had a
view of the ocean which would
also make for some wonderful
scenery.
As well the couple visited with
Bill’s cousin, Duncan, who lives
an hour’s drive from Willis Point.
Once every three years a large
quilt show happens on the island
and Rena enjoyed attending
that. Perhaps she picked up
some new ideas for her own
handiwork.
You may remember an earlier
report when Betty Hulley and Ken
Carnochan returned from a winter in
Arizona. An accident with their
truck forced them to leave their
trailer in storage there.
Mid-June they headed back to
Arizona to bring that trailer to
Canada. They choose to come
home by a different route, one
that they would not enjoy in the
winter coming up through
Colorado and crossing the United
States by the northern states.
Betty reports that Utah with itsmountains is a beautiful state. While in this Rocky Mountain area, they travelled up to ZionNational Park at the 10,000 footaltitude. An opposite experience was journeying down in Bryce Canyon. They remarked that the corn crops in Iowa and Illinois are at about the
same stage as the crops here at
home.
In the midst of Amish country in
Indiana, they camped at the
campgrounds in the Shipshewana
region. Shipshewana is home to a
huge flea market, 60 rows of
vendors.
Actually, they remarked that that
flea market is really just a day’s
drive away for anyone looking for
that type of trek.
The couple were gone for
three weeks coming home just
after the U.S. Memorial Day
celebrations.
Webster’s Dictionary recognized a
new word last week, one that you are
likely to hear many times as
governments try to stimulate our
own economy rather than that of our
neighbour to the south
‘staycations’.
Truth to tell, our own area,
province and country has some
wonderful sights and experiences to
enjoy depending on whether one is
looking to fill a day, a weekend or a
month.
