The Huron County Health Unit
received laboratory confirmation
June 19 of the first case of H1N1 flu
virus in a Huron County resident.
The adult was hospitalized and is
now recovering at home. The person
has underlying medical conditions.
On June 22, the second Huron
County case was confirmed. The
individual, also an adult, was not
hospitalized and is recovering at
home. The health unit said the
person had contact with someone
diagnosed with H1N1 flu.
“This second case simply tells us
what we’ve been expecting,” said
medical officer of health Dr. Nancy
Cameron. “While we don’t usually
see influenza in the summertime,
the H1N1 flu virus is like seasonal
flu.”
Dr. Cameron said there is no
evidence at this point that anything
has changed in terms of the severity
of the virus. In Ontario, only a small
numbr of people have needed
hospitalization. Most make a full
recovery without any complications.
To reduce the risk of spreading the
illness Dr. Cameron reminds that
people should:
• Wash hands frequently and
thoroughly with soap and hot
water or, if soap and water are
unavailable, use an alcohol-based
hand sanitizer.
• Sneeze or cough into your sleeve
or arm.
• Stay home if you are ill.
• Frequently clean commonly
touched surfaces such as
keyboards, doorknobs, counter-
tops etc.
Symptoms for influenza are
similar to those for seasonal flu:
headache, chills, cough, fever, loss
of appetite, muscle aches and
fatigue, runny nose, sneezing,
watery eyes and throat irritation.
Vomiting and diarrhea have also
been reported in some cases.
Influenza and several other
(severe) respiratory infections are
transmitted from person to person
through coughs and sneezes that
release droplets into the air and onto
surfaces. People may become
infected by breathing in the germs
or touching contaminated surfaces
and not washing their hands
afterwards.
The health unit will continue to
post updates on the status of H1N1
flu virus on its website at
www.huroncounty.ca/health.
