THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2009.Youth ready to SERVE in Vanastra Good eats They were raisiing funds for Brussels Kids Corner last Friday with a barbecue lunch. On grill duty were Kristen Pipe and her mom Lori. The summer event, sponsored by the local churches will take place July 20-24 each afternoon. (Vicky Bremner photo) From fixing roofs to organizingclothes, 63 youths and leaders fromacross Ontario and Alberta willspend a week in Vanastra and areathis summer to serve others in amissions program appropriately called SERVE. The missions program is being organized by local churches. SERVE is designed to challenge youth to grow in their faith and discover how they can make a difference in the world. This year’s theme is, From The Inside Out. It is about creating positive change in the world starting from the inside out, in ourselves and reaching out into the community. SERVE is about helping others who need a hand up, not a hand out. It may mean painting someone’s house who can’t afford to do it, or is unable to do it themselves. Ranging in age from 14 - 20, youth are coming from as far away as Rocky Mountain House, Alberta to spend the week of July 4-11 in Huron County. Days are spent doing community service projects. In the evenings, the youth gather at Vanastra Community ChristianReformed Church for supper andtimes of worship. The youth also getone day off their work week tospend at the beach. Each night, a band (led by local musician Jeremy Jongejan) and a speaker lead the youth in a meaningful search on how to create change, from the inside out. This year’s speaker is Gord Park, a highschool drama teacher in the NiagaraPeninsula and a well known speakerat various SERVE sites for a numberof years. Alongside SERVE, youth director Ben VanStraten is leading an Encounter course. This week-long event runs concurrently with SERVE but focuses more on encouraging youth to examine theirfaith and develop leadershipabilities. He says SERVE andENCOUNTER are excellent waysto open the eyes of church youth. “I think that sometimes our eyes are shut and we don’t really see that people are struggling,” says VanStraten. “These experiences help youth know of the needs in their community.” Works sites are fast filling up, but if you, or a family or organization you know could use some hands-on help, you can call Pastor Speelman at 519-482-7376.
