The annual Sunday school
anniversary and chicken barbecue of
Knox United Church was held on
Sunday, June 21, Father’s Day, as
the Carter family welcomed a
packed church for the service.
The sanctuary had been decorated
with early spring flowers by the
committee of Nancy Folkard, Joyce
Vincent, Sheila Nixon and Doreen
Marks. Elizabeth Procter was
organist, accompanied by Lila
Procter on the guitar for the
hymns.
Mrs. Kim Dodds welcomed
everyone to the service, gave the
announcements and invited Andrea
Shiell to lead in the call to worship.
Kathleen and Emily Stennett read a
poem, Fathers are Wonderful People.
After the singing of, In the Bulb
There is a Flower, Lindsay Shiell led
in prayer.
The junior choir, directed by Lila
Procter and accompanied by
Elizabeth Stennett sang, The
Mustard Seed and If I Were a
Butterfly. Gabriel Carter led in the
prayer of confession which was
followed by Kendall Jardin reading
the poem, Our Fathers.
Adel Dodds told the children the
story of a boy who planted an apple
seed and the patience and time it
took for it to grow. She encouraged
them to be patient in doing whatever
they wanted to do.
Jessica Procter read Hebrews 12:
7-11, then Autumn and Sydney
Wightman read a poem,What Makes
a Dad.
The junior Sunday school then put
on their camping gear, and
lifejackets and got into the canoe
which had been placed in the centre
of the choir loft. They sang,
Row, Row, Row Your Boat
as they used their oars, then
picked up their fishing poles and
sang, I Will Make You Fishers of
Men.
The congregation enjoyed the
eight students who took part, led by
Shannon Bieman and Nicole
Coultes.
The senior Sunday school students
then took turns introducing their
fathers by giving the audience a
reason as to why their father was the
best dad. This was acted out as a
classroom with Kathleen Stennett as
the teacher. Some students were
dressed as boys and girls, while the
others were dressed as fathers with
special talents.
The play concluded with everyone
realizing the best Father is God.
The offering was received by Sean
and Chris Cottrill, Steve Coultes and
Mark Stennett, and was dedicated by
Adel Dodds.
Steven Coultes, Sunday school
superintendent, thanked all those
who had taken part, and especially
the teachers who had put the
program together. He thanked all the
parents and family members who
had shown up to support their
children. He then called each student
to the front and presented the 25
children who were present with a
certificate.
Amelia Pletch gave the closing
prayer and after the children sang
Johnny Appleseed the choral
blessing was sung.
The congregation then enjoyed the
delicious chicken that had been
barbecued by several of the men of
the congregation and the relishes and
then cupcakes that had been
prepared by the mothers. Many
visited outside while others enjoyed
their dinner in the basement of the
church.
Joint Sunday services will be held
in the Knox Presbyterian Church
starting the first Sunday of July at
9:30 a.m.
