enjoyable and so well performed.

BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, June 21, Father’s Day
were Joann MacDonald and Lois
van Vliet. Ushering were Laurie
Sparling and Rob Mason.
Emily Phillips (filling in for Rev.
Clark) welcomed everyone to
church. The flowers placed at the
front of the church were placed in
memory of fathers and grandfathers
Don Craig, David Craig and Charlie
Johnston by Marilyn Craig and
family. Ralph and Amy McCrea
placed a plant in memory of their
fathers, Tom Smith and Neil
McCrea.
The call to worship was followed
by the singing of the first hymn,
Morning Has Broken and the prayer
of approach.
The gospel reading was Luke 2:
41-49 and Luke 3: 23-28. The hymn,
Would You Bless Our Homes and
Families.
For the children’s story Emily had
two short stories about fathers. Floyd
Herman thanked the congregation
for giving him the opportunity to be
the music director and the choir had
recruited three new members. The
choir sang the anthem, Cats in the
Cradle with Rick Elliott, Steven
Sparling and David Onn singing the
lead.
Emily introduced guest speaker
Erin Roy who had the honour to
carry the torch at the Beijing
Olympics, in memory of her uncle
Const. Robert Plunkett who was
killed in the line of duty.
Erin spent last Father’s Day in
China.
She entered an essay contest and
was one of 18 chosen out of 6,000 to
carry the torch. Erin’s run was 30
metres that took one minute and
security was very strict.
While there they visited a school
in Tibet. There was one boy that they
chose to help with his schooling. It is
very costly to go to school there so
they arranged to pay for about three
years of his education.
Erin said it was a trip of a lifetime.
The next hymn, I the Lord of Sea
and Sky was followed by the
offering and the offertory prayer, the
prayers of the community and the
singing of The Lord’s Prayer.
The last hymn, Faith of Our
Fathers was followed by the
commissioning and benediction and
the singing of The Three Fold Amen.
Erin passed her torch among
the congregation after the
service.
Blyth Area Farmers’ Market willbe looking for new vendors andvolunteers when it holds its 2009
annual meeting Saturday.
Market co-ordinator Keith
Roulston said new vendors are
required to help provide the variety
requested by customers, both local
shoppers and Festival visitors.
In recent years local church
groups have taken part in the market
and last year young entrepreneurs
were also invited to take part.
Still, the biggest need is for more
local vendors, Roulston said.
“We need to find more local
farmers or gardeners to offer fruits
and vegetables and bakers to sell
bread, pies and other baked goods.
Local shoppers and theatre-goers
have made these their favourite
products over the years.”
Volunteers are also needed to help
in setting up the market some
weeks, and to help promote it to
shoppers and to vendors.
The market’s annual meeting will
be held at Saturday, March 7 at 2:30
p.m. at The Citizen office. Anyone
interested can attend or contact
Roulston at 519-523-4792, days, or
519-523-9636, evenings and
weekends.
The Twp. of North Huron has
experienced another period of
positive building growth in the early
months of 2009.
From Jan. 1 to May 31, 36
building permits with a value of
$1,636,073.90 were issued. In the
same five month period in 2008, 29
permits were issued with a value of
$969,090. The same period has seen
eight new residential units created
compared to five in 2008.
“We have seen a marked increase
in the value of permits issued to date
this year. Along with the three
additional residential units much of
the $664,983.90 increase in permit
value can be attributed to detached
garages and storage sheds, as well as
new farm buildings and
renovations,” said Dave Black, chief
building official.
Income obtained from building
permits allows the department to
operate without allocating tax
dollars to support it.
