The Citizen, 2009-05-21, Page 8Blyth Thunder U-14 boys travelled to Bayfield to play their second game of the season on May 14. Thunder’s game captains were Derek deBoer and Zach Drost. During the first half of the game, Blyth outshot their opponents, but they had a difficult time getting the ball past the Bayfield goalie. Mid- fielder Leendert vanDorp booted the ball towards the Bayfield net, but the goalie shoved the ball out of the way. Ben Nonkes ran in and popped the bouncing ball into the net with his chest to get the lone goal of the first half. Bayfield came out strong in the second half of the game and scored within the first few minutes back on the field. Before long, Bayfield took another long shot and shot the ball over Blyth’s keeper Tyler Boven’s head. L. vanDorp made a long throw in and his twin Jan Paul headed the ball toward the net. Joel Pizzati ran in and scored a goal to tie up the game. Blyth really poured on the pressure and finished the game strong. They fought hard to gain control of the ball and set up some plays for some terrific shots at Bayfield’s net. deBoer threw in the ball and Jan Paul van Dorp shot the ball into the net as the minutes were counting down in the match. Blyth held onto the lead and won the game with a close score of 3-2. The Blyth U-14 boys squad never gave up and came from behind to pull off a win. It was a great team effort. The mid-fielder and defence worked hard to get the ball out of their end and limit the opponents shots on net. The forward line-up took some great shots at net during the match and played with some great skill and determination. Thunder’s forwards for this game were Hunter Broda, deBoer, Nonkes, Pizzati, Jan Paul vanDorp and Trystan Weber. The Thunder’s next match will be played against Wingham at Sparling’s field in Blyth on May 21. SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 21, 2009.
