An aviation pioneer and Blyth
native died on March 21 from
Alzheimer’s Disease in Beaverton,
Ontario. Lorna deBlicquy was 77
years old and she survived by her
daughter Elaine and her sister
Phyllis Thatcher.
While she was born in Blyth,
deBlicquy grew up and began her
love for aviation in Ottawa, where
she decided that she wanted to learn
to fly at the age of 14.
Lorna Vivian Bray was born in
1931. Her father was a bank
manager in Blyth in the early years
of the Great Depression. She was the
youngest of three children in the
family by several years.
It was in Ottawa, after her father
was transferred there, that she was
taken up in a plane for the first time,
for a flight over the city, that she first
fell in love with flight and decided
that she wanted to be a pilot.
Throughout school she was an
accomplished writer, and often
crafted assignments around flight.
Initially, deBlicquy earned the
money for flying lessons by
babysitting and then just into her
teens, deBlicquy enrolled and soloed
in a J-3 Cub plane at the Atlas
Aviation Flying School in Ottawa at
the age of 15.
By the age of 16, she was
skydiving, becoming the first female
in Canada to make a parachute jump.
She continues to hold the post as the
youngest to ever make a parachute
jump at the Ottawa Parachute Club.
It was 1946 that deBlicquy had her
first flight and by 1948 she had
enough hours to qualify for her
pilot’s licence.
She also attended Carleton
College, which is now known as
Carleton University, and graduated
in 1950 with a teaching certificate
after three years there. At that time
she had also obtained her
commercial pilot's license.
She met her first husband Tony
Nichols, a geologist, at Carleton.
She eventually found a job as a
bush pilot after marrying Nichols
and moving to Northern Manitoba.
However, in the early 1960s, her
marriage had begun to deteriorate
and she moved back to Ottawa
where she reconnected with
deBlicquy the son of a Belgian pilot.
They were married in 1962 in New
Zealand.
Soon after, deBlicquy’s flight
career began to really take off. She
was the first Canadian to win the
Amelia Earhart Scholarship from the
Ninety-Nines, an international
organization of female flyers.
In addition to the scholarship,
deBlicquy was also awarded the
A.D. Dunton Alumni Award of
Distinction from Carleton
University and the Orders of Ontario
and Canada.
